After Rajinikanth announced his decision, he propounded that there will be a massive change in everything. “Everything is fate, This election is to change the fate of Tamil Nadu. If I win that will be a victory for the people, and if I fail, it belongs to them too…I will change everything, everything!,” he said passionately.
Speculations about Rajinikanth entering politics started in 1996 when he had a strained relationship with the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. He would later claim that it was his statement that defeated her in the polls in the same year.
The legendary actor who will turn 71 on 12th December reportedly said that he is expected to begin his political journey after completing the shooting for his latest film ‘Annathe’.
The former bus conductor launched his own Rajini Makkal Mandram (RMM) on 1st January 2018, ever since the inception of a political launchpad for the Kollywood movie hero.
Rajinikanth said that he vows to bring a “corruption-free” government for Tamil Nadu at the same time stated that the people of Tamil Nadu want an honest, corruption-free, caste-less, secular and spiritual politics in the nation’s most southern state.
The Indian Express in a report said that Rajinikanth had fuelled speculation about his party leanings by introducing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit’s intellectual wing RA Arjunamurthy to hold the post of chief coordinator of his fans’ association. The BJP man was recently relieved of his post in the ruling party.
Rajinikanth’s foray into politics only goes to show that he is the true ‘Thalaiva’ indeed. Indian movie stars are no strangers to politics, chief among them was the late Jayalalithaa herself, apart from Tamil star, Kamal Haasan, who had also launched his political career by forming his own party in 2018. The actor however failed to win a seat in a national election last year.
On the other hand, wife of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan has served as a four term Rajya Sabha upper house member, while comedy actor Govinda served as a parliamentarian from 2004 to 20029 and veteran actress Rekha was a member of the Rajya Sabha parliament.
