The pandemic that has ravaged the world in the last two years is an unfortunate circumstance for many of us, however with the negativity surrounding the virus, there’s positivity too. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the inability to travel and explore the world like we used too, many took up new and interesting hobbies and embarked on a lifetime adventure.

One such adventure is hiking and mountain climbing, more so ever since the loosening up of the SOPs in the last recent months. Recognising this, Jamuna Karmehen proved to us that climbing Mount Kinabalu is not impossible and has inspired other women to do the same.

This inspiring lady who hails from Shah Alam, said she received many congratulatory messages on Facebook for completing the impossible Mount Kinabalu climb and had even been asked for tips and advice to climb up the mountain.

Jamuna, a 44-year-old hiker, had journaled her hiking adventure when she was on the verge of giving up and abandoning her hike to the summit because her legs were weak.

She also mentioned that she was discouraged at the Sayat-Sayat checkpoint, which was 1.5 kilometres from Mount Kinabalu’s peak.

She was already thinking of failing, and was pondering if she was really that bad a hiker but her determination to inspire the people she trains led her to finish the challenging and arduous hike.

Jamuna, who manages her own training and leadership programme, reached the top at 8am in tears after overcoming her greatest hurdle, and while her guide offered to carry her down, she rejected, saying she would would go down slowly instead.

I tell myself that I can do the impossible and nothing is ever too hard and difficult – Jamuna Karmehen

Jamuna’s view on life has also changed as a result of this significant achievement.

“Most importantly, I have another inspiring story to tell people, that if I can overcome a mountain at the age 44, so can anyone else,” she expressed to Malaymail.

Let’s use Jamuna’s journey as an encouragement and embark on a new passion.

Don’t put it off any longer, plan a hiking trip with your pals this weekend.
