Amidst The Controversy, Jai Bhim Is Shortlisted For The 2022 Golden Globe Awards

It’s just over a fortnight since the Suriya-starrer Jai Bhim was released, and the film is earning love not just among cinema buffs but also in political and civil society circles. Leaving the whole team on cloud nine, the Tamil courtroom flick was recently shortlisted at the Golden Globe Awards 2022 for the “Best Non-English Language Film” category.

Helmed by TJ Gnanavel and produced by Jyothika and Suriya under 2D Entertainment, the intriguing flick is based on a true story which happened in 1993 where a case was fought by retired Justice K Chandru. It needs to be mentioned that 39 years ago, Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi was nominated at the Golden Globes under the category of Best Picture – Foreign Language and emerged as a winner.

According to the Golden Globe Awards, the director T. J. Gnanavel commented on the torture scenes stating;

“The atrocities faced in real life by the tribal clan, especially Irulars, who are lodged in prisons to prove unproved cases, are far worse compared with what was shown in the movie.”

As we know the film is currently the highest user-rated film on IMDb with a score of 9.6. It surpassed the ratings of our longtime favourites film The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather.

Jai Bhim might not be a classic because of its flaws, but it certainly deserves a big applause for its fine cinematics.
