Wishnuendran Balan is a young man whose journey exemplifies the delicate balance between higher education and a successful side business. His story highlights how dedication and passion can redefine one’s path towards a fulfilling life. By managing the demands of academic pursuits while nurturing his entrepreneurial spirit, Wishnuendran has shown that with determination and focus, it is possible to excel in both areas.

Originally from Perak, Wishnuendran Balan’s journey started in a humble home filled with rich values and simple living. His mother worked as a telephone operator, and his father managed machinery, both dedicating themselves tirelessly to support their family. As the youngest of three brothers, it was within these modest surroundings that Wishnuendran’s story of determination and passion began to unfold.

Affectionately called Wishnu, his mother, a firm believer in the power of education, ingrained in him the idea that earning a degree was the key to unlocking a world of opportunities.

“Be a degree holder and do whatever you want,” she would often say.

This straightforward yet impactful advice sparked ambition in young Wishnu’s mind. Today, he is pursuing a degree and is currently in the middle of an internship in graphic design.

A Journey with the Thavil Nadaswaram

While his mother emphasized academics, his father introduced the family to the captivating world of classical music, particularly the Thavil Nadaswaram. This classical instrument has become central to their lives, serving as both their side business and a unique bond that unites them as a family.

At the age of four, this 24-year-old began accompanying his father to events, which sparked his interest in learning about the instrument. Watching his father skillfully play the Thavil Nadaswaram at weddings and temple events, he soon embarked on his own journey, officially showcasing his musical talents at these occasions during his primary school years.

The Power of Passion

It is often said that everyone has a hidden talent that defines their uniqueness. For Wishnu, that talent was photography. What began as a hobby quickly sparked a deep curiosity and grew into an all-consuming passion. At 16, Wishnu asked his father for a camera.

Several months later, his father was able to buy him one, and Wishnu set off on a self-guided journey into the world of photography. He had no mentor or formal training, but he did have something equally valuable: fierce determination and YouTube. The internet became his classroom, where he soaked up every tip, technique, and trick that would shape him into the photographer he dreamed of becoming.

Facing Criticism and Finding Motivation

When he first ventured into photography, it was far from a smooth start. However, when he shared his interest with his parents, his father didn’t dismiss it. Instead, he offered his support. Seeing his son’s eagerness to learn, his father introduced him to a photographer friend. Wishnu was thrilled to assist this uncle with a wedding shoot, eager to learn something new. At that time, he had limited knowledge about using the camera effectively but hoped to receive some guidance from his uncle. Unfortunately, his expectations were dashed when he faced belittlement and criticism, despite being a newcomer in the field.

Reflecting on the incident, he recounted how, when he asked his uncle for guidance on using the camera, his uncle responded dismissively, “Figure it out on your own,” in a condescending manner in front of everyone at the wedding. Additionally, while he was taking photos in another part of the event, another photographer approached him and asked, “What are you doing here?” Wishnu explained that he was there to help his uncle and was driven by a genuine interest in learning more about photography.

In response, the photographer summoned his son to inspect the camera Wishnu was using, and both of them looked down on him. Later that same year, Wishnu encountered the father-son pair again at a temple event, where they were all taking photos with their own cameras. As Wishnu was focused on his photography, the uncle called him over and flaunted his camera lens, saying, “Even if it’s your dream, you can’t afford this. It’s far more expensive than your current camera.” Although this comment stung, Wishnu chose to view it as motivation, believing that every challenging situation holds a silver lining.

Balancing Passions and Building a Business

Wishnu faced financial difficulties in acquiring photography equipment, but another passion of his helped alleviate this challenge. By performing as a Thavil player at events, he was able to generate some income. He used the money he earned from his percussion performances to purchase all of his photography gear.

While pursuing his degree, Wishnu found that most weekends were free from classes, allowing him to take on photography gigs during this time. At times, he would handle two to three events in a single weekend, often sharing the workload with his friend Gurun Balan.

Eventually, the two friends decided to launch their own photography business, @kathaigal__, and brought on another assistant, Akass Tanabalan. Initially, Akass admired their work and later had the chance to join them. Now, the three of them coordinate their schedules and divide the work based on their availability each day.

Guiding Lights along the Way

Though he navigated this path independently, he was not without support. Ganes Sri, a friend and mentor from his hometown, played a crucial role in shaping his journey. Ganes Sri’s expertise in wedding photography provided him with invaluable insights and knowledge. Wishnu also acknowledged Guru Balan, another friend who had been a steadfast companion throughout this remarkable journey.

Starting out in photography as novices, they began their journey with just a single camera body and a speedlight. Despite facing skepticism and criticism from others, they remained undeterred and channeled their passion into their work.

Listening to His Heart

Wishnu’s journey exemplifies the importance of following one’s passion. While studying graphic design at UNISEL, he continued performing classical music at weddings on weekends. This commitment not only fueled his love for music but also ensured his financial independence.

His goal was simple: to be AUTHENTIC

Wishnu has fully embraced the idea that the quest for knowledge is a continuous journey. Today, he skillfully and resolutely balances his internship with his photography business, while also pursuing his side hustle as an Indian percussionist.

“I have a goal of owning my own studio and aspire for my work to be widely recognized,” Wishnu vowed, promising to work tirelessly to make his big dream a reality.

His story stands as a testament to the idea that each of us possesses a unique talent, ready to be uncovered and developed. In the midst of doubters and challenges, Wishnuendran’s unwavering message rings loud and clear: “DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.”

Wishnuendran’s journey illustrates the power of perseverance and passion. By following his heart and embracing his talents, he has shown that with dedication, even the most ambitious dreams can be realized. His experience encourages others to seek out and cultivate their own unique skills, reinforcing the idea that true fulfillment comes from doing what makes you happy.
