The much-anticipated trailer for filmmaker PS Vinothraj’s directorial venture, Kottukkaali, starring Soori and Anna Ben, was released yesterday. The film, which has already garnered significant international attention, is now set for a theatrical release on 23rd August.

Kottukkaali delves into complex themes such as misogyny, superstition, and the strict caste system, all of which are portrayed through the intense drama surrounding the lives of two Indian families. The story revolves around Meena, played by Anna Ben, who is in love with a man from a lower caste. However, her family is opposed to this union and mistaking her emotional turmoil for possession, they take her to an exorcist. The film opens after these dramatic events, showcasing Meena’s silence, which her family attributes to demonic possession, believing that once she is “cured,” nothing will stand in the way of her arranged marriage to Pandi, portrayed by Soori.

Trailer Highlights

The trailer, set to the sound of a rooster’s clucking, is an intense visual experience that sets the tone for the film’s narrative. The opening shot of Meena gazing at a rooster tied to a stone. Soori’s character, Pandi, is shown as a conservative guy whose range grows throughout the trailer. The sound design and visuals work heightens the suspense, giving a dramatic cinematic experience that promises exploration of human emotions and social issues.

International Acclaim

Kottukkaali premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and was also screened at the Transilvania International Film Festival, where it received high praise. The film’s success at these prestigious events has heightened anticipation for its release in India.

Production Team

Directed by PS Vinothraj, whose debut film (Koozhangal) won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2021 and was India’s official entry to the 94th Academy Awards, Kottukkaali is produced by Sivakarthikeyan Productions in association with The Little Wave Productions. The film features cinematography by B Sakthivel and editing by Ganesh Siva, both of whom contribute significantly to the film’s intense and immersive atmosphere.
