The recent brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has sparked widespread outrage and protests across India. This horrific incident has not only shocked the nation but also highlighted critical issues surrounding the safety of medical professionals and the ongoing problem of sexual violence in the country.
What Happened?
On August 9, the lifeless body of a female doctor was discovered within the premises of RG Kar Medical College, one of Kolkata’s prominent government teaching hospitals. According to reports, the trainee doctor was on call and had dinner with her colleagues in the seminar hall while watching Olympics. After having her dinner, she stayed in the seminar hall to get some rest. She was last seen sleeping in the hall around 3am; her body was then found the next morning.
The initial statement from the hospital said that the doctor had committed suicide. However, this narrative quickly unraveled when an autopsy report confirmed that the victim had been brutally raped and murdered. The report detailed multiple injuries on the victim’s body, indicating a violent struggle before her tragic death. The doctors have said, that there were injuries all over her body and not a single inch of her body was spared. According to Dr. Subarna Goswami, who accessed the autopsy report, 151 mg of semen was found in the victim’s body, strongly suggesting that more than one person was involved in the assault.
National Outcry and Protests
The incident triggered an immediate response from the medical community and activists across the country. Thousands of doctors took to the streets, demanding better security measures for medical professionals and swift justice for the victim. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals, putting pressure on the authorities to address the issue.
Protests under the banner “Reclaim the Night” were organized in multiple states, including West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. These protests aimed to highlight the issue of sexual violence in India and the urgent need for protective measures for women, especially those working in vulnerable environments like hospitals.
The Suspect and Investigation
After the incident, Kolkata police arrived to the crime scene to investigate by reviewing the hospital footage and compiling the suspects. The Kolkata police quickly identified and arrested a suspect, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who had frequent access to the hospital. The CCTV footage showed Sanjoy Roy entering the hospital at 4am while wearing a Bluetooth device in his ear and left 40 minutes after without it. After investigations, Sanjoy confessed his crime and was produced in court.
However, the severity of the crime and the suspicion of a larger conspiracy led the victim’s family to request the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On August 13, the Kolkata High Court granted this request, transferring the investigation to the CBI.
Further details from the autopsy have only intensified the calls for justice. The parents of the victim, along with medical experts, have pointed out the severe injuries all over the victim’s body, indicating that this was a coordinated attack, likely involving multiple assailants (gang rape). The case investigations are still on going.
A Call for Accountability and Justice
The brutal nature of this crime has raised serious concerns about the safety of medical professionals, particularly female doctors, in India. Dr. Raja Dhar from CK Birla Hospital in Kolkata described the incident as one of the most gruesome he has encountered, emphasizing that the extent of the injuries could not have been inflicted by a single person.
As the CBI continues its investigation, there is a growing demand for stronger legal protections for medical professionals. The Central Protection Act, proposed in 2022 to safeguard medical professionals from violence, has gained renewed attention. FORDA has urged the government to expedite the enactment of this law, which has become a focal point of the protests.
The nation now waits for the CBI’s findings and the legal proceedings that will follow. The Kolkata High Court has directed the CBI to complete its investigation within two months, by October 9. The victim’s family and the medical community are hopeful that this case will not only bring the perpetrators to justice but also lead to systemic changes that will protect others from similar tragedies.
This case is a grim reminder of the ongoing struggle against sexual violence in India and the need for stronger protections and swift justice. As protests continue and the investigation unfolds, the country stands united in demanding accountability and an end to the culture of impunity that often surrounds such brutal crimes.
