Activists Support Government’s Proposal to Fine Men Trespassing Women-Only Coaches as a Commitment to Women’s Safety

The government is preparing a law that would impose fines on men who trespass pink coaches designated for female passengers on public transportation. Activists believe that the proposal to fine male passengers who enter female-only coaches demonstrates the government’s commitment to women’s safety. They also noted that it would promote respect for designated public spaces.

Lawyer Kokila Vaani mentioned that this initiative would strengthen the purpose of these spaces, which is to provide women with a sense of security and privacy while using public transport. She added that it would likely decrease incidents of harassment or unwanted attention. Kokila Vaani is the former chairperson of the Selangor Bar.

“However, its success relies on public awareness, proper enforcement, and adequate monitoring,” said Kokila Vaani.

Kokila also recommended improving hotline services at public transport stations to offer immediate assistance to women, ensuring a more comprehensive approach to their safety while traveling.

Anti-gender-based violence advocate Yu Ren-Chung suggested that while imposing penalties could encourage better compliance among men, the approach should be inclusive and not excessively rigid. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to safety, which includes the effective implementation of other policies, such as anti-sexual harassment and anti-stalking laws.

The NGO Sisters in Islam emphasized that safeguarding women requires more than just legal measures or regulations—it also involves shifting mindsets and educating the public.

“We must respect and value spaces designed to protect and empower women, not because they are the weaker sex, but because they deserve the same sense of safety as everyone else.”

Meanwhile, many commuters support the government’s decision to impose fines on those who enter women’s designated coaches. They believe that this measure will enhance the safety and comfort of female passengers, ensuring that these designated spaces serve their intended purpose.  However, some individuals feel that it might be somewhat excessive to penalize men who inadvertently enter these coaches without realizing it.

The proposed law to impose fines on men who enter female-only coaches reflects a significant step toward enhancing women’s safety and promoting respect for designated public spaces. While activists and commuters largely support the initiative for its potential to improve security and comfort, there are calls for a balanced approach that includes public awareness, effective enforcement, and comprehensive safety measures. Advocates stress that beyond legal penalties, a shift in societal attitudes and better education are crucial for ensuring that all individuals, regardless of gender, can enjoy the same sense of safety and respect in public spaces.
