The Malaysian Games, known as Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA), is a prestigious biennial sports event organized by the National Sports Council (MSN) of Malaysia. It is held in collaboration with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), various National Sports Associations, and the state governments that host the event. SUKMA was established in 1986, with Kuala Lumpur serving as the inaugural host city.

In addition to discovering emerging sports talents, choosing different states as hosts for the event is intended to enhance local sports facilities, thereby contributing to the overall growth and development of sports across Malaysia. This year, the 21st edition of SUKMA is taking place in Sarawak from August 17 to August 24, 2024. The event brings together young athletes from across the country, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and compete in various sports.

Recently, the martial art of Silambam and the traditional Indian sport of Kabaddi were included in SUKMA. This inclusion is a significant acknowledgment of these sports and reflects a broader recognition of the Indian community’s rich sporting heritage. To uphold this honour and demonstrate their value, the athletes have showcased impressive performances in the event this year.

Among the participants, the Silambam athletes from Perak have achieved remarkable success. They won three Gold medals and one Silver medal in yesterday’s competition. Laashmita A/P Balakumara secured a Gold medal in the Women’s Thanithiramai Silambam Stick category, while Aswin A/L Sri Ganapathy won Gold in the Men’s Thanithiramai Kuthu Varisai.

Vidyasri A/P M. Arutselvan also claimed Gold in the Women’s Thanithiramai Kuthu Varisai category. Additionally, Sharvanish A/L Hema Nagarajan achieved 2nd place in the Men’s Thanithiramai Silambam Stick category, earning a Silver medal. This outstanding performance highlights the remarkable achievements of the Perak team.

This success underscores the hard work, practice, and dedication of the athletes, as well as the invaluable guidance and training provided by their masters and coaches. Such achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering support and encouragement of the athletes’ parents. These athletes have brought immense pride to their state, family, teachers, and school. Additionally, it is important to recognize the outstanding performances of all participants from various states who have contributed to the success of SUKMA. Their collective efforts showcase the vibrant talent and spirit of Malaysia’s youth in sports.
