However, since its release on streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, the film’s reception has taken a downturn. The primary reason for this shift in perception lies in the nature of the viewing experience.
In theaters, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is designed to be a visual and auditory spectacle, leveraging the large screen and advanced sound systems to create a more engaging experience. The film’s intricate details and elaborate effects are optimized for the cinematic environment, where they can be fully appreciated. However, when watched at home, the impact of these elements diminishes significantly. The difference in screen size, sound quality, and overall viewing atmosphere contributes to a less captivating experience.
Social media reviews reflect this disparity, with many viewers finding the film tedious in a home setting. Some have reported skipping the entire first half or watching it in fast-forward mode to avoid the perceived monotony.
What has come as a significant surprise is that Dhanush’s crime drama ‘Raayan’, which started streaming simultaneously with the grand epic ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, is trending ahead of it on Amazon Prime Video.
Although ‘Raayan’ has received mixed reviews, its crime genre and intensity make it particularly well-suited for OTT platforms, which cater to fans of such genres. Released on July 26th, ‘Raayan’ was well-received in theaters and proved to be a blockbuster success. Directed by Dhanush, the film stars him alongside Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, Dushara Vijayan, SJ Suryah, and others, with music composed by AR Rahman. Notably, ‘Raayan’ is Dhanush’s 50th film as an actor and his second directorial project.
In contrast, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has struggled to spark interest for repeat viewings, with even first-time viewers finding it dull and tedious. Given this lack of engagement, it’s not surprising that a more straightforward film like ‘Raayan’ is outperforming the grand spectacle of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.
