Malaysians intending to visit Ha Long and Sa Pa are advised to postpone their travel plans for now due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi in Northern Vietnam, according to a weather advisory issued by the Malaysian Embassy in Hanoi.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the embassy urged Malaysians living, working, or traveling to the affected regions out of necessity to stay updated by following local news closely in the coming days.
“Do e-register with our Mission at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my/login and take all necessary precautionary measures, keep close track of advice from, and abide by recommendations/instructions from the relevant local authorities,” the posting read.
The embassy reported that heavy rains brought on by Typhoon Yagi have led to severe flooding and landslides in the provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, and Cao Bang. Local authorities have warned that with ongoing rainfall and rising water levels, there is a potential for widespread flooding in the northern region, including areas around Hanoi.
The embassy has issued flood warnings for Hanoi due to rising water levels in the Red River reaching at least Alert Level 1. The affected areas include:
– Phuc Tan Beach (Phuc Tan Ward, Hoan Kiem District)
– Phuc Xa Beach (Phuc Xa Ward, Ba Dinh District)
– Tu Lien, Quang Ba, and Phu Thuong (Tay Ho District)
In a report from Hanoi on Tuesday, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) stated that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has directed ministries, agencies, and local authorities to work tirelessly to address the emergencies arising from the severe flooding in northern cities and provinces caused by Typhoon Yagi.
During a meeting with permanent cabinet members focused on law-making, the Prime Minister highlighted that the floods and landslides following the typhoon had resulted in 296 people either dead or missing as of 3 pm that day. He emphasized that prioritizing the health and safety of the people must be the top concern, according to VNA.
The government leader instructed the full mobilization of the political system and the implementation of all necessary measures to address the floods and landslides, the report added.
