Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s visionary approach, which emphasizes not only the economy but also education and culture, had a significant impact at the 46th Thirumurai Competition organized by the Malaysia Hindu Sangam. This event was held with the support of the Prime Minister’s Special Officer, Mr. Shanmugam Mookan.
Earlier this year, starting in January, funds were allocated separately for each state and for the national-level competition. On behalf of the Prime Minister, Mr. Shanmugam Mookan provided a total of RM230,000 for the development of Indian culture and for this competition. The event, which included 10 states—Johor, Melaka, Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, and Pahang—culminated in the final competition held in Batu Caves.
This event was established as a foundation to bring the ‘Thirumurai’ to the younger generation and deeply embed the roots of our heritage in their minds.
At the 2023 Putrajaya Cultural Festival, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the importance of not only economic development but also the growth of arts and culture. In line with the Prime Minister’s call, Mr. Shanmugam Mookan has supported this competition, helping to introduce the ‘Thirumurai’ to the younger generation and highlight their significance.
In his speech, Mr. Shanmugam Mookan expressed his admiration for the talent and engagement of the younger generation.
“Today, I am truly impressed by the talent and deep dedication our children have shown. Their ability to preserve the ‘Thirumurai’ and prevent it from fading away moves me deeply. The ‘Thirumurai’ is not just a cultural tradition, but a bridge that will sustain our ancient heritage and pride for future generations. I take immense joy and pride in supporting an event that ensures the preservation of this rich legacy for years to come.”
“Along with continuing my commitment to serving our community, I am ready to enhance my efforts with the blessings of the Honourable Prime Minister by advancing the ‘Nammai Naam Kaapom’ initiative through the nnkcare.my platform. This initiative was created with the intention of promoting unity, preserving culture, and fostering community development within our society,” said Mr. Shanmugam Mookan.
This competition, which has brought together over 16,000 participants nationwide, not only preserves the ancient arts of the Tamil people but also raises cultural awareness and fosters national unity. As we continue to compete and excel on a global stage, our ‘Madani’ government has always been a steadfast supporter of maintaining various cultural traditions. This competition serves as a strong reminder that we must never forget our cultural values and that it is our responsibility to pass them on to future generations. Striving to preserve and elevate our cultural heritage not only safeguards our values but also paves the way for creating a rich and prosperous Malaysian society for generations to come.
