Datuk Dr. PS Nathan, the former president of the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 90. His death marks a significant loss for the entire bowling community, as announced by MTBC. The organization expressed deep sorrow over his passing, emphasizing the profound impact he had on the sport and the legacy he leaves behind. His contributions to bowling in Malaysia have been invaluable, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew and worked with him within the bowling fraternity.
Nathan, acknowledged as the longest-serving president of any national sports association in Malaysia, leaves behind an exceptional legacy in the sport of bowling. A trailblazer in the field, he founded the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) in 1974 and led the organization for nearly 50 years.
In addition to his leadership, Nathan was also a former Asian Games gold medallist, further solidifying his contributions both as an athlete and an administrator. It was only this past May, during MTBC’s 50th anniversary celebrations, that Nathan stepped down from his role, passing the presidency to his deputy, Datuk Mohd Najeeb Abdullah. His influence on Malaysian bowling remains unmatched, marking the end of a remarkable era.
Nathan also served as president of the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) for three terms, demonstrating his influence and leadership on the global stage. He was instrumental in securing bowling’s inclusion in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, the only time the sport has been contested in the history of the Games. His contributions significantly elevated the sport, both within Malaysia and internationally, leaving an enduring legacy.
Dr. PS Nathan was a dermatologist by profession and served as president of The Dermatological Society of Malaysia from 1984 to 1986. Since 2010, he also held the position of Chairman of the Medical & Dental Advisory Committee at Assunta Hospital. In addition, Dr. Nathan ran his own clinic, ‘Nathan’s Skin, Hair & Laser Centre,’ in Bangsar, alongside his son, Dr. Ruban Nathan. The clinic is well-established and highly regarded in the Bangsar area for its quality care and expertise.
His funeral was held today, marking a solemn farewell to a remarkable individual. May his soul rest in peace, and his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
