Superstar Rajinikanth’s Remake Films of Legendary Amitabh Bachchan and Their Iconic Collaborations in Hindi Cinema

After 33 years, two of Indian cinema’s biggest megastars, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, are reuniting in the Tamil film ‘Vettaiyan’. Directed by T.J. Gnanavel, renowned for ‘Jai Bhim’, and produced by Lyca Productions, the recently released trailer showcases an epic showdown between Amitabh and Rajinikanth, centered around a clash of ideologies. The film is set for a grand release on 10th October 2024.

In the 1970s and 80s, Superstar Rajinikanth appeared in several remakes of Amitabh Bachchan’s films. Later, the two megastars shared the screen in multi-starrer films. Now, the dynamics between them have shifted, with Rajinikanth taking the lead role and Amitabh Bachchan portraying a supporting character.

Between 1978 and 1990, Rajinikanth featured in 14 remakes of Amitabh Bachchan’s films from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Here’s a look at the list of those movies below.

Shankar Saleem Simon (1978)

The Tamil remake of Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) saw Rajinikanth step into the role originally played by Amitabh Bachchan in the Hindi version.

Naan Vaazha Vaippen (1979)

‘Naan Vaazha Vaippen’ is the Tamil remake of the 1974 Hindi film *Majboor*, which was directed by Raj Tandon and written by the legendary duo Salim-Javed.

Tiger (1979)

The movie ‘Tiger’ is the Telugu remake of the 1977 Hindi film ‘Khoon Pasina’. In this version, Rajinikanth took on the role originally played by Vinod Khanna in the Hindi film.

Ram Robert Rahim (1980)

This film is the Telugu remake of ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977), with Rajinikanth stepping into the role originally portrayed by Vinod Khanna in the Hindi version.

Billa (1980)

‘Billa’ is one of Rajinikanth’s classic blockbusters, serving as the Tamil remake of the 1978 film *Don*. It remains one of his most successful films to date.

Thee (1981)

‘Thee’ is the Tamil remake of the 1975 action crime film ‘Deewaar’, which was written by the iconic duo Salim-Javed and directed by Yash Chopra.

Padikkathavan (1985)

‘Padikkathavan’ is another classic hit featuring Superstar Rajinikanth. It is the Tamil remake of the 1982 film            ‘Khud-Daar’.

Mr. Bharath (1986)

Mr. Bharath, directed by S.P. Muthuraman and featuring Rajinikanth alongside Sathyaraj and other prominent actors, is a Tamil remake of the 1978 Hindi film Trishul.

Jeevana Poratam (1986)

This film is the Telugu remake of the 1974 movie ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makaan’, directed by Manoj Kumar.

Maaveeran (1986)

Maaveeran is the Tamil remake of the 1985 film Mard, directed by Manmohan Desai. In Maaveeran, Rajinikanth takes on the lead role, bringing his signature charisma and intensity to the character.

Velaikkaran (1987)

Velaikkaran is one of the notable hits in Rajinikanth’s filmography. It is the Tamil remake of the 1982 film ‘Namak Halaal’ directed by Prakash Mehra.

Dharmathin Thalaivan (1988)

Dharmathin Thalaivan is another memorable film in the illustrious career of Superstar Rajinikanth. It serves as the Tamil remake of the 1978 Hindi film ‘Kasme Vaade.’

Siva (1989)

This film is the Tamil remake of the 1977 Hindi classic Khoon Pasina, in which Rajinikanth assumes the role originally portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan.

Panakkaran (1990)

‘Panakkaran’ is the Tamil remake of the 1981 Hindi film ‘Lawaaris.’

After achieving superstardom in the Tamil and Telugu film industries, largely through his performances in remakes of Amitabh Bachchan’s films, Rajinikanth ventured into Hindi cinema, making his debut in 1983. His transition to Bollywood marked a significant milestone in his career, allowing him to reach a broader audience and showcase his talents on a larger platform.

During their illustrious careers, Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan shared the screen in several films, creating memorable moments that resonated with fans.

Andha Kaanoon (1983)

In this action drama, both actors played pivotal roles, navigating a story filled with themes of justice and revenge. The film was well-received, further cementing their status as icons in Indian cinema.

Hum (1991)

‘Hum’ featured Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role, with Rajinikanth and Govinda portraying his two brothers in supporting roles. The film went on to become the second highest-grossing film of the year.
