The construction of an escalator at the Batu Caves Murugan Temple is scheduled to begin with a groundbreaking ceremony on January 25. This announcement was made by Tan Sri R. Nadarajah, Chairman of the Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam. The initiative to construct an escalator providing access to the temple’s upper cave has been pursued diligently and consistently.
In this context, the Selangor State Chief Minister, Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, recently made a special visit to Batu Caves. During the visit, a comprehensive briefing on the project was provided to him. Subsequently, he assured that the state government’s approval letter for the project would be issued by January 19, 2025.
Tan Sri Nadarajah, on behalf of the temple administration, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government and the Chief Minister for their support.
With the blessings of Lord Murugan, the construction of the escalator is officially set to commence. The groundbreaking ceremony, led by Tan Sri Nadarajah, will take place on January 25. The temple administration has set a target to complete the escalator project before the Thaipusam festival in 2026.
This escalator facility is designed to assist elderly individuals, as well as those with mobility challenges, in reaching the hilltop temple with greater ease. It will enable them to pray and receive the divine blessings of Lord Murugan without the physical strain of climbing the 272 steep steps to the temple. For many elderly devotees, the climb has been a significant obstacle, preventing them from fully participating in the temple’s spiritual offerings. This new facility will ensure that they can access the temple comfortably, allowing them to experience the spiritual benefits of visiting the sacred site.
Tan Sri Nadarajah shared this information while speaking to reporters after the Paneer Abhishekam ceremony for Lord Murugan, held in conjunction with the New Year celebrations yesterday. The 140-foot Murugan statue at the Batu Caves Temple is adorned with Panneer Abhishekam every New Year’s Day. Yesterday, many devotees flocked to the temple to begin the year with the blessings of Lord Murugan.
