Amid the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world was gripped by uncertainty and fear, Lavaniyah Ganapathy faced an even more harrowing ordeal. Her six-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with leukemia, thrusting Lavaniyah into a life-altering battle. While the global crisis dominated headlines, her family fought a deeply personal war—one that would test their strength, resilience, and hope in unimaginable ways.
In 2020, as Malaysia grappled with the restrictions of the Movement Control Order (MCO) during the peak of the pandemic, life for Lavaniyah Ganapathy and her family was far from ordinary. Her eldest child, a lively and cheerful six-year-old, was adapting to the new normal of online learning, much like other children her age.
When her daughter began showing signs of exhaustion, Lavaniyah initially attributed it to the challenges of prolonged screen time. However, her concerns deepened when a persistent fever set in. Fearing the possibility of COVID-19, the family treated her with paracetamol, hoping she would recover.
“But something didn’t sit right,” Lavaniyah reflected. “A mother’s instinct knows when something is seriously wrong.”
A visit to the doctor and a series of blood tests confirmed Lavaniyah’s deepest fears—her daughter’s white blood cell count was alarmingly high. The diagnosis was devastating: leukemia.
“The moment the doctor said it, it felt like the ground had disappeared beneath me,” Lavaniyah recalled, her voice trembling with emotion. “I called my husband to break the news, but for a few moments, neither of us could speak. The silence on the line was filled with our tears. Words failed us. It was an unbearable reality to face.”
The diagnosis hit like a thunderbolt, leaving no room for grief. While the world was consumed with battling the pandemic, Lavaniyah was thrust into a race against time to save her daughter’s life.
Her daughter’s leukemia was categorized as high-risk, requiring urgent and specialized care. However, treatment options in Malaysia were limited. The only hope lay in Singapore, but the cost was overwhelming—a staggering RM750,000.
“I felt completely overwhelmed, like I was drowning,” Lavaniyah admitted. “How could anyone possibly raise such an enormous amount of money? But there was no alternative—we had to find a way.”
Fortunately, the family had unlimited insurance coverage, a precaution they had wisely taken for all their children during Lavaniyah’s pregnancy. Her husband stepped in to manage the financial challenges, allowing her to focus on their daughter’s care.
“As a mother, you don’t dwell on the possibility of failure,” she said with determination. “You simply do whatever it takes and keep fighting.”
Through countless sleepless nights and relentless research, Lavaniyah immersed herself in understanding her daughter’s condition.
“I refused to be caught off guard,” she said resolutely. “I knew I had to brace myself for the worst, but I was determined to be ready with a plan, no matter what the future held.”
She also shared an urgent message for others in similar situations: “Don’t turn to shamans or unproven methods. The sooner you begin proper medical treatment, the better your child’s chances. Time is critical, and there’s no room to waste.”
As Lavaniyah and her family navigated the arduous path of their daughter’s treatment, they encountered many others facing the same overwhelming battle. These were families desperately in need of financial assistance, emotional resilience, and a glimmer of hope.
One story that stood out to her was of a family on the brink of giving up. They were unable to raise the RM750,000 required for their daughter’s life-saving transplant and felt utterly defeated by the impossible burden.
“They were from the same daycare as us,” Lavaniyah shared. “My husband spoke to them, and their desperation was heart-wrenching. They told him they were prepared to give up because they simply couldn’t afford the treatment.”
Hearing their plight, Lavaniyah felt an unshakable resolve. “Something inside me said I couldn’t let this happen,” she said. Leveraging her extensive network, she sprang into action to raise funds for the family. Despite the challenges of the MCO, they achieved the seemingly impossible—gathering RM750,000 in just four days.
This experience marked a profound turning point in Lavaniyah’s life, becoming the spark that led to the creation of the Children Cancer Association Malaysia (CCAM). The organization was established with the mission of providing financial aid to children in need of cancer treatment.
“It was in that moment I discovered my true purpose,” Lavaniyah reflected. “I realized there were many families out there, just like ours, struggling to afford the treatment their children desperately needed. That’s when CCAM was born—I knew I had to step up and make a difference.”
Today, Lavaniyah Ganapathy wears many hats—not only as a devoted mother to three children but also as a beacon of hope for families facing the challenges of childhood cancer. Drawing from her own profound and painful journey, she founded the Children Cancer Association Malaysia (CCAM).
This organization emerged as a heartfelt response to her experiences, aiming to provide support, guidance, and compassion to families navigating the emotional and physical toll of childhood cancer. Through CCAM, Lavaniyah has transformed her personal tragedy into a mission of empowerment and solidarity, ensuring that no family faces this journey alone.
Managing CCAM while supporting her daughter through leukemia treatment took an immense emotional toll on Lavaniyah. She confessed, “Every day felt like a new battle.”
“I remember watching my daughter repeatedly go under anesthesia for bone marrow procedures,” she recalled.
“You’d think it would get easier, but it never does. Each time feels just as terrifying as the first, and the fear never changes. There were nights when I would sit by her side, holding her hand, watching her pulse as she slept. I went without sleep for 60 days straight. I couldn’t bring myself to close my eyes, terrified that something might go wrong while I was asleep.”
Through all the hardships, Lavaniyah never gave up. Her unwavering determination fueled her, even when the challenges seemed insurmountable. “I had to stay strong because I knew I couldn’t afford to fall apart. Not for my own sake, but for hers.”
Despite the overwhelming obstacles, Lavaniyah has found ways to cope. She stresses the importance of staying united as a family, and she encourages parents to communicate openly with each other during such difficult times.
“This level of stress has the potential to tear families apart. Don’t let it happen. Work together, support each other, and avoid wasting time pointing fingers,” she urged.
Lavaniyah emphasized that many people underestimate the high cost of cancer treatment, even in government hospitals. A bone marrow transplant, for example, can range from RM70,000 to RM100,000, a significant expense that many families cannot afford. This, she pointed out, is why having insurance is crucial.
She also shared valuable advice: “Trust the doctors, seek multiple opinions, and don’t let fear take control. Focus on the steps you can take to give your child the best possible chance.”
Reflecting on her journey, Lavaniyah acknowledges how deeply it has transformed her.
“Three years ago, I was a completely different person. I was constantly stressed, anxious, and on edge. Today, I feel stronger and more capable. I approach challenges with greater ease. I’ve learned that, no matter what life throws my way, I have the strength to handle it.”
Through the establishment of CCAM, Lavaniyah has built a meaningful legacy—one fueled by her love for her daughter and her unwavering commitment to helping others.
Lavaniyah is determined that no child should suffer due to their family’s inability to afford treatment. She believes that CCAM exists to ensure that this doesn’t become a reality. Her work with CCAM is far from finished. As the organization continues to grow, Lavaniyah’s goal is to extend its reach to more families, offering not only financial assistance but also emotional support.
“There’s no manual for running a charity,” she acknowledges. “I’m still learning along the way, but one thing is certain—no child should lose their life because of financial barriers.”
Through her efforts, Lavaniyah is breaking down obstacles, providing hope, and shaping a future where children battling cancer have a fair chance at survival, regardless of their background, nationality, or financial circumstances.
Her final piece of advice is both simple and powerful: “Show up for others. Be compassionate. That’s the lesson I’ve taken from all of this. Sometimes, that’s all a person truly needs.”
Lavaniyah Ganapathy’s journey is one of immense struggle, unwavering resilience, and profound love. From the shock of her daughter’s leukemia diagnosis to the creation of the Children Cancer Association Malaysia (CCAM), Lavaniyah has transformed personal tragedy into a powerful mission to help others. Her work continues to break down the barriers that prevent children from receiving the life-saving treatment they deserve, while inspiring others to show compassion, unity, and determination. With CCAM, Lavaniyah is not just offering a chance for survival; she is giving families the hope that no child will face the fight of their life alone.
