Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Jalan Masjid India has now fully reopened, four months after an eight-meter- deep sinkhole that led to the tragic disappearance of an Indian tourist G. Vijaya Lakshmi. The reopening marks the end of extensive repair and restoration work with DBKL assuring the public of the area’s safety and stability.

The sinkhole which appeared on 23rd August 2024, triggered a nine day search and rescue operation. Unfortunately, efforts to locate Vijaya Lakshmi had been called off on August 31st 2024 due to safety concerns after a second sinkhole was discovered near the area. Investigations. Later, it was revealed that human activity and soil erosion contributed to the incident, prompting the government to allocate RM 10 million to DBKL for geotechnical research to prevent future occurrences.

In a statement, DBKL reaffirmed its commitment to periodic monitoring of the area in collaboration with utility companies to ensure public safety. The reopening of Masjid India signals not just the infrastructural recovery but also the beginning of efforts to restore confidence among visitors and local traders.

The community started to avoid the area between these four months, causing the traders to struggle with their business sales.  Despite the physical reopening, Masjid India’s traders continued their business with the economic aftermath of the incident.

A local business store worker has shared that people are extra cautious but she has seen the authorities efforts, she ensures Jalan Masjid India is safe again and they need their shoppers to be back. With Ramadan and other festivals approaching, the local business’s owners and workers are looking for public support, as usually during this season the area is busy with people starting their shopping. But now the customers aren’t there making it challenging for their business to continue.

A Call For Collective Actions

Traders have urged DBKL and the government to implement initiatives that will revive Jalan Masjid India’s status as a shopping destination. As much as it’s important to keep the area safe, it is also crucial to give importance to bring the life back for Masjid India. The full reopening of Masjid India is a crucial step in the healing process of the community and traders who rely on the street’s lively atmosphere. While the scars of the tragic incident remain, the resilience of local businesses, combined with DBKL’s ongoing monitoring, offers a hope for the return of normalcy.
