Recent reports of bullying incidents in a Kuala Lumpur boarding school have sparked concerns nationwide, prompting calls for immediate action. The Alliance for a Safe Community has urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to strengthen safety measures in schools to protect students from such harmful experiences.

Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, suggested installing (CCTV) cameras in critical areas of schools. He also highlighted the importance of creating confidential channels for students to report bullying incidents without fear of retaliation. He emphasized that all cases of bullying must be reported promptly and addressed transparently to ensure the well-being of students.

A recent report shed light on troubling cases of bullying and excessive punishments at a boarding school in Kuala Lumpur. A certain secret groups, were accused of forcing junior students to endure humiliating punishments, including stripping and performing commando-style exercises. These revelations have intensified the call for immediate and decisive action.

MOE’s Firm Response

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek reaffirmed the MOE’s zero-tolerance stance on bullying. She warned school principals and management against concealing incidents and assured the public that all complaints—whether from parents, students, or school authorities—would be taken seriously.

She has also ensured that, all complaints will be handled according to the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the ministry, ensuring a systematic and inclusive approach. Transparency is crucial, and they will take firm action without hesitation.

Tan Sri Lee Lam called for collaboration between the MOE, police, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and psychologists to address bullying comprehensively. He stressed the need for stronger support systems, including trained counselors for both victims and perpetrators, to create a safer school environment.

In addition, the MOE is conducting advocacy campaigns in selected schools, engaging student leaders and head prefects to identify specific issues and foster a culture of respect. The ministry is also committed to resolving bullying complaints swiftly, gathering data, and ensuring justice for all involved.

Bullying is a serious issue that undermines the educational experience and mental well-being of students. The recent actions and proposals by the MOE and the Alliance for a Safe Community demonstrate a strong commitment to tackling this issue head-on. By fostering transparency, implementing effective reporting systems, and enforcing disciplinary actions, Malaysian schools can become safe havens where every student feels protected and valued.
