Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni hinted at the possibility of establishing a Temenggong post to represent the Indian community in Sarawak. Speaking at the New Year 2025 celebration organized by the Miri Hindu Society (MHS) at the Sri Kamini Durga Eswari Temple in Taman Tunku yesterday, the Sibuti MP affirmed that the leadership and contributions of the Indian community in Sarawak are gaining growing recognition.
“To my knowledge, Indian community leaders are acknowledged across Sarawak. There is a strong possibility that these leaders will be elevated to the position of Temenggong — the highest rank in the community leadership hierarchy. Currently, the Indian community is represented by a Penghulu. In the future, we are committed to appointing a Temenggong from the Indian community in Sarawak,” he said.
Additionally, the Deputy Health Minister expressed his hope for continued strong cooperation between the Indian community and other groups in his Sibuti constituency.
“Racial unity and harmony are evident in Taman Tunku, where various places of worship, including mosques, suraus, Hindu and Chinese temples, and churches, are all situated close to one another.”
Regarding the construction of the Sri Kamini Durga Eswari Temple in Taman Tunku, Lukanisman highlighted that it has helped local communities better understand the temple’s significance, as well as the culture and beliefs of their Hindu neighbors.
He expressed his strong support for the MHS’s plan to upgrade the temple, which includes the addition of a multipurpose hall. During the event, Lukanisman announced a RM10,000 allocation for the MHS. Also in attendance were MHS Chairman Murugayah Veloo, Miri Indian Association Chairman Councillor Karambir Singh, and Councillor Jeffery Phang.
The event hosted by the Miri Hindu Society marked a significant moment for the recognition and continued growth of the Indian community in Sarawak. Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni’s remarks emphasized the importance of unity, cultural understanding, and cooperation between different communities in the region. The event not only celebrated cultural diversity but also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to promoting harmony and inclusivity.
