In a landmark moment for the Indian-American community, Suhas Subramanyam, the first Indian-American Congressman from the East Coast, took his oath of office on the sacred Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. This historic event reflects the growing influence and representation of Indian-Americans and the Hindu community in U.S. politics.
His swearing-in ceremony was not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for his family. His mother, who immigrated to the United States through Dulles Airport, was present to witness her son’s ascent to one of the highest legislative bodies in the world. Reflecting the moment, he stated,
“If you had told my mother when she landed at Dulles Airport from India that her son would go on to represent Virginia in the United States Congress, she might have found it hard to believe. But my story is a testament to the promise America holds.”

Suhas follows in the footsteps of Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu-American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Who made history in 2013 by taking her oath on the Bhagavad Gita, inspiring a tradition that Suhas Subramanyam now proudly carries forward. His decision to swear on the Bhagavad Gita not only honors his cultural and religious roots but also underscores the importance of diversity and representation in American politics.
A former policy advisor to President Barack Obama, Suhas began his political career by serving in the Virginia General Assembly in 2019. During his tenure, he founded the bipartisan “Commonwealth Caucus” and championed key legislation addressing issues such as toll reduction, consumer rights, gun violence prevention, and equitable access to education. His leadership and dedication to public service played a crucial role in his election to Congress, representing Virginia’s 10th District.
His victory adds to the growing number of Indian-American lawmakers in the U.S. Congress. Currently, four Hindu lawmakers serve in the 119th Congress: Suhas Subramanyam, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, and Shri Thanedar. This diverse representation reflects the increasing prominence of South Asian communities in shaping America’s future.
As Suhas Subramanyam embarks on his journey in Congress, his election serves as an inspiration for future generations of South Asians and Indian-Americans aspiring to enter public service. His story exemplifies the values of perseverance, cultural pride, and the promise of the American dream, paving the way for a new wave of diverse leaders in the United States.
