Actress Parvathy Thiruvothu recently stirred a discussion at Wayanad Literature Festival with her sharp critique of young male actors in the industry. In a conversation with celebrated author Arundhati Roy, Parvathy shared her words of disappointment over the younger generation’s lack of concern for addressing issues.
According to the actress, while the older generation of male actors was committed to patriarchal values and misogyny, the younger actors’ indifference to change is equally, the younger artists’ indifference to change is equally the same. She pointed out that many high budget films continue to glorify “alpha male” characters and keep the gender stereotype alive. This, she argued, is a hindrance in the industry’s cultural evolution and reinforces regressive narratives.
Parvathy expressed frustration over lack of accountability among the younger generation who despite being more exposed to societal changes, fail to challenge these norms. “They can clearly see what is happening around them,” she said.
She also reflected on her own journey, revealing that she once worried about working with such actors. However, she admitted that those concerns no longer trouble her, though the lack of progress in the industry continues to be disheartening.
The conversation raises critical questions about the responsibility of younger actors in shaping the future of Malayalam cinema. As the industry faces calls for greater inclusivity and representation, Parvathy’s remarks highlight the need for a cultural shift led by those with the platform to make a difference.
Parvathy, known for her fearless approach to addressing gender issues, was last seen in Her, a Malayalam anthology film that focused on the lives of five women from diverse backgrounds. The actress is also part of the much-anticipated project Thangalaan, continuing her journey of bringing powerful narratives to the forefront.
