Former MIC president and Malaysian Health Minister, Tan Sri Dr. S. Subramaniam, will be awarded the esteemed Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) 2025, today. This honor, presented by the Indian government, recognizes his exceptional contributions to public service and India-Malaysia relations.
The PBSA, regarded as the highest accolade for overseas Indians, will be presented during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8 to 10. The President of India will officiate the award ceremony.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
The Indian High Commission in Malaysia praised Tan Sri Subramaniam for his long-standing commitment to public service, citing his instrumental role in fostering bilateral ties between India and Malaysia. Acknowledging his leadership, the commission stated, the award reflects Tan Sri Dr. Subramaniam’s longstanding commitment and dedication to public service and positive contribution to the enhancement of India- Malaysia relations.

During his tenure from 2008 to 2018, he held key portfolios in Human Resources and Health, implementing pivotal initiatives for the socio-economic betterment of the Indian community in Malaysia. Notably, he lead programs such as the MyDaftar and Mega MyDaftar campaigns, which addressed documentation challenges for over 7,000 stateless Indians.
Under his leadership, specialized bodies such as the Special Implementation Task Force (SITF) and Sedic (now known as MITRA) were established to improve education, welfare, and socio-economic opportunities for the Indian community. A achievement was securing annual government allocations for Tamil schools starting in 2010, which significantly enhanced infrastructure and resources for historically underfunded institutions.
The PBSA highlights individuals of Indian origin who excel in fields such as public service, politics, and international relations. This year, 27 people were chosen through a rigorous selection process led by a jury chaired by India’s Vice President and the Minister of External Affairs.
Tan Sri Subramaniam’s award underscores his lasting impact on the Indian diaspora in Malaysia and his efforts in bridging cultures through dedicated public service. This accolade not only celebrates his achievements but also sets a benchmark for future leaders committed to serving global Indian communities.
