Steven Thiru Elected President of the Commonwealth Law Association

Prominent lawyer Steven Thiru has been elected as the president of the Commonwealth Law Association (CLA) for the 2025-2027 term, starting from February 1, 2025. A former Malaysian Bar president, Thiru has been actively involved with the CLA since 2019, serving as an executive committee member before being elected to this esteemed position.

The senior lawyer becomes the second Malaysian to lead the CLA, following in the footsteps of another former Bar Council president, Cyrus Das, who served as president from 1999 to 2003.

In a statement following his election, Thiru expressed that the CLA would continue to advocate for the administration of justice across the Commonwealth. He emphasized the association’s central mission to uphold and promote the rule of law, human rights, access to justice, and constitutionalism.

“In this regard, we remain, and will continue to be, steadfast in the face of all threats related to absolutism, abuse of power, and, importantly, the misuse of law disguised as the rule of law,” Thiru remarked.

Thiru, the managing partner at Messrs Steven Thiru in Kuala Lumpur, brings with him 32 years of experience in legal practice. Throughout his distinguished career, he has also dedicated 10 years to serving on the Malaysian Bar, further solidifying his commitment to upholding justice and the principles of law in the country. His vast experience and leadership in the legal field have shaped his strong stance on safeguarding the true spirit of the law, emphasizing its role in protecting rights and justice rather than serving as a tool for tyranny or oppression.

He currently serves as one of the vice-presidents of the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific. Thiru pursued his law degree at the University of Leicester and was called to the Bar of England and Wales at Middle Temple. He was later admitted to the Malaysian Bar. In addition to his legal qualifications, Thiru holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Universiti Malaya.

With his extensive experience and unwavering commitment to justice, Steven Thiru’s election as the president of the Commonwealth Law Association marks a significant milestone in his distinguished legal career. As he takes on this prestigious role, Thiru’s dedication to promoting the rule of law, human rights, and constitutionalism across the Commonwealth remains central to his mission. His leadership and vision will undoubtedly shape the future of the CLA as it continues to address critical issues like the abuse of power and the importance of genuine legal protection.
