The Perak state government has imposed a ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages at all Thaipusam procession sites across the state from February 10 to 12.

According to Sinar Harian, State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and National Integration Committee Chairman A. Sivanesan stated that the decision was made in response to complaints about previous incidents involving devotees and visitors.

“In the past, there were complaints regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol during the procession, particularly at night, but no strict action was taken. This time, however, if such incidents occur again, the police will take firm action without compromise.”

“Offenders will be immediately arrested and brought to court,” he stated after attending a state-level Thaipusam coordination meeting today.

While there are no specific laws banning alcohol consumption at religious events, Sivanesan explained that individuals could still be charged under the Penal Code if their intoxication leads to public disturbance.

“I hope this issue does not arise. We have assigned CID (Criminal Investigation Department) officers to monitor the situation,” he added.

Last year, the Penang Island City Council attempted to enforce a similar ban to ensure a smooth and peaceful celebration. However, after facing public backlash, the ban on alcohol sales was lifted for most outlets along the chariot procession routes.

Perak is anticipating more than 350,000 devotees and international tourists for this year’s Thaipusam celebrations in Ipoh. Several roads will experience partial closures during the event, including Jalan Sungai Pari, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Lahat, Jalan Sultan Yusoff, Jalan Sultan Idris, and Jalan Raja Musa Aziz.

The main Thaipusam festivities will be held at two key locations – Sri Subramaniar Temple in Gunung Cheroh better known as Kallumalai temple, and Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Jalan Sungai Pari, Buntong.

The Perak state government’s decision to enforce the alcohol ban during Thaipusam processions reflects its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring a respectful and peaceful celebration. With heightened security measures in place and a large turnout of devotees and tourists expected, authorities are focused on facilitating a smooth and harmonious event. As preparations continue, the emphasis remains on upholding the sanctity of the festival while addressing public concerns for the safety and well-being of all attendees.
