As the well known Tamil romantic film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV) marks its 15th anniversary, acclaimed director Gautham Vasudev Menon has revealed that he wrote the film’s script in just six days.
In a video clip that is now circulating on social media, Gautham Menon reflected on Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa completing 15 years. He remarked, “Fifteen years of VTV. Sometimes, I wonder what’s so special about 15 years. I felt the same when it turned 10. But I am truly happy that people still reach out to me, saying they have watched the film and feel a deep connection with it. They relate to the mood we created, the characters, and the dialogues. That connection is even stronger for those who have experienced similar situations in their own lives. That was always the intention when the film was released.”
“I immediately felt that many people would relate to the film. Over the years, I’ve had people approach me and say, ‘I’m Karthik, and this is my Jessie. Thank you for bringing our story to life.'”
Revealing that he wrote the film in less than a week, Gautham Menon shared, “This film holds a special place in my heart because I wrote it in just six days. Initially, it was intended for a major superstar. However, when he heard the script, he questioned, ‘There’s no action in this. How are we going to make it work? This doesn’t suit me.’ I clearly remember taking the script straight back to Simbu. Initially, I needed some convincing to meet him, but the moment I did, I knew this was going to be something special.”
Gautham Menon also expressed that without Simbu, he wasn’t sure if the magic of the film would have come to life. “The way Simbu grasped what was required and brought it to the screen felt incredibly real. There was no need for lengthy discussions—he simply understood the essence of the character and delivered it effortlessly.”
Gautham Menon shared that he thoroughly enjoyed the entire filmmaking process. “The experience was truly fulfilling. People often say, ‘We had fun on set,’ but for us, it was more than just fun—we were deeply passionate about the work, and while it required a lot of effort, we loved every moment of it. There were times when we found ourselves simply smiling, laughing, and eagerly looking forward to the next day’s shoot. We traveled to Malta and New York, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see that people are still watching and talking about the film.”
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa remains a timeless classic in Tamil cinema, resonating with audiences even 15 years after its release. Gautham Menon’s revelations about the film’s swift writing process and the effortless performances, particularly by Simbu, highlight the magic that made it special. His passion for storytelling, combined with the emotional depth of the film, continues to leave a lasting impact on fans. As the film’s legacy endures, it stands as a testament to the power of heartfelt cinema that connects deeply with audiences across generations.
