It’s common to hear Malaysians effortlessly switch between multiple languages in a single conversation. However, it’s rare to come across a foreigner who can do the same with equal fluency.

Recently, WeirdKaya shared an extraordinary encounter with a Japanese photographer who traveled thousands of miles to Malaysia to capture the vibrant Thaipusam celebrations. What made the experience even more remarkable was his impressive command of Tamil, leaving many in awe.

In an exclusive interview with WeirdKaya, a witness recounted the surprising encounter, which took place at Batu Caves during Thaipusam, where thousands of devotees and tourists had gathered for the celebration.

She shared that during her brief conversation with the Japanese photographer, he responded entirely in Tamil, despite her primarily speaking in English.

“I was completely shocked. At first, I assumed he was asking me something, so I naturally replied in English. But when he responded in Tamil, I was taken aback. What made it even more amusing was that throughout our conversation, I continued speaking in English, yet he consistently replied in Tamil,” she said.

The witness further revealed that this was the Japanese photographer’s second time attending Thaipusam. She also noted his impressive knowledge of Indian culture, as he was able to name several well-known Indian musicians and expressed a deep interest in Indian Carnatic classical music.

“This was quite surprising, as even some Indians themselves are unfamiliar with these classical musicians, let alone non-Indians,” she remarked.

She also shared two videos with WeirdKaya, one of which captured the Japanese photographer reciting a famous movie line made popular by South Indian superstar Rajinikanth.

This remarkable encounter highlights the deep appreciation and passion the Japanese photographer has for Indian culture, particularly Tamil language and traditions. His ability to fluently converse in Tamil and his knowledge of Indian classical music and cinema left a lasting impression on those who met him. It serves as a reminder of how cultural connections can transcend borders, bringing people together through shared interests and mutual respect.
