For over six decades, Moorthy Flour Mill has been a trusted name in Rawang, renowned for providing high-quality products for home cooking. A popular destination among customers, the mill offers a wide range of spice blends, including masalas, chili powders, curry powders such as chicken and mutton curry powder, as well as rasam powder and various flours. Managed by Prema, Moorthy Flour Mill has remained a top choice for those seeking authentic and flavorful ingredients.

The high quality of Moorthy Flour Mill’s products has earned a loyal customer base over the years, with trust in the brand continuing to grow. Prema, who manages the mill, shared that their customer base includes many Malay and Chinese buyers as well. Chinese restaurant owners frequently purchase curry powders for dishes like curry mee and mixed rice, while Malay catering businesses rely on the mill’s ingredients for their cooking. Moorthy Flour Mill’s commitment to quality has made it a preferred choice across diverse communities.

“Customers who buy our products will definitely recognize the quality. We do not use any chemicals—everything is freshly processed. We never keep old stock. Our customers come from all over Malaysia, and we receive orders from various states, which I personally ensure are delivered,” said Prema.

Amanah Ikhtiar, which provides loans to women entrepreneurs in the SME sector, has played a crucial role in the growth of Moorthy Flour Mill. Prema shared that she first applied for a loan from Amanah Ikhtiar in 2009, and upon approval, she received RM3,000. Since then, the organization has been a continuous source of support for her, with her loan amount increasing over the years to as much as RM100,000.

“The loan application process is simple. We just need to submit the necessary documents, and they will process the loan by verifying eligibility and visiting the business location. If all the criteria are met, the loan will be approved. Recently, I received a loan of RM25,000. During that time, my husband passed away, and I had managed to repay RM5,000 of the loan. Amanah Ikhtiar generously waived the remaining balance. I am truly grateful for their support,” said Prema.

Recently, Prema also received RM10,000 through the Prosperity, Empowerment, and New Normal (PENN) initiative under Amanah Ikhtiar. The PENN initiative is dedicated to supporting and empowering Indian women entrepreneurs by providing financial assistance and resources to help them grow their businesses.

Through this initiative, many women have been able to expand their ventures, improve their economic stability, and achieve financial independence. By offering funding and continuous support, PENN plays a crucial role in fostering entrepreneurship among Indian women, enabling them to thrive in competitive markets and contribute to their communities.

Her son, representing the third generation, has also stepped into the business to support his mother. Having grown up watching his parents manage the flour mill, he naturally developed an interest in the trade. He learned to operate the machines from his father and mastered the recipes from his mother, which paved the way for him to become an entrepreneur and continue the family legacy.

Moorthy Flour Mill stands as a shining example of hard work, quality, and perseverance, growing from a humble family business into a trusted name in Rawang and beyond. A key factor in its success has been the continuous support from Amanah Ikhtiar, which has empowered Prema through financial assistance and resources. From her first loan of RM3,000 in 2009 to receiving up to RM100,000 over the years, Amanah Ikhtiar has played a crucial role in sustaining and expanding her business. Their support, including waiving her loan balance during a difficult time, has been instrumental in her journey.

Additionally, initiatives like Prosperity, Empowerment, and New Normal (PENN) have further strengthened Indian women entrepreneurs, enabling them to achieve financial independence and grow their businesses. With this unwavering support, Moorthy Flour Mill continues to thrive, and with the next generation stepping in, the business is well-positioned to carry forward its legacy for years to come.
