Renowned actor and filmmaker R. Madhavan has frequently acknowledged the pivotal influence of acclaimed director Mani Ratnam in shaping his career. Madhavan rose to fame as a romantic hero with Mani Ratnam’s 2000 Tamil film Alaipayuthey, which became a defining moment in his journey. Though he later ventured into action films like Run, it was Mani Ratnam who steered him back toward a different cinematic trajectory, helping him refine his artistic path.
In a recent interview, R. Madhavan recalled an incident where he unintentionally upset director Mani Ratnam with a remark about Aayutha Ezhuthu. Speaking with India TV, Madhavan explained that his career transition was largely a personal choice. Initially, Mani Ratnam had envisioned him in the role that Siddharth ultimately played, but Madhavan was adamant about portraying Inba in Aayutha Ezhuthu.

After listening to the film’s storyline, Madhavan expressed his desire to play Inba, believing it to be the most compelling character in the film. He also felt that the other roles might not leave a lasting impact. However, this remark did not sit well with Mani Ratnam, who took offense to it.
Determined to prove his commitment, Madhavan dedicated a month to transforming his appearance. “I shaved my head, played golf without sunscreen to develop a deep tan, and became completely unrecognizable,” he recalled. When he arrived at Mani Ratnam’s office in this new look, the security guards failed to recognize him and initially stopped him at the entrance. It was only after he was allowed inside that the filmmaker, shocked by the drastic transformation, realized who he was—only recognizing Madhavan when he smiled. Impressed by his dedication, Mani Ratnam eventually agreed to let him play Inba.
Madhavan found inspiration in the way lions hunt their prey, noticing their calm demeanor even in the midst of violence. He understood that Inba’s character needed a similar detached ruthlessness—one that exuded aggression without emotion.

Madhavan and Mani Ratnam later worked together on Kannathil Muthamittal and Guru. However, after Guru, Madhavan chose to forge his own path. “Since many of my successful films were credited to Mani sir, I wanted to establish my own identity and discover my own journey,” he explained.
Madhavan is now preparing for the OTT release of Test, where he will star alongside Siddharth, Meera Jasmine, and Nayanthara. Additionally, he is set to play a pivotal role in Kesari Chapter 2, which is slated to hit screens on April 18.
