Kereta Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) has clarified that the RM5 charge recently highlighted by consumer group is part of it’s existing Flexi Fare structure and applies uniformly across all ticketing platforms, including counter services, the KTMB website, mobile app and ticket vending machines (TVMs)
The national rail operator said the fee, which sparked public concern following comments from the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca), is not a new surcharge but an element of its pricing model introduced in 2020.
In a statement, KTMB explained that the Flexi Fare system was developed to provide passengers with more options and competitive prices based on demand, time of booking and travel periods. “Customers can enjoy better rates by booking early or travelling during off-peak hours,” the company said.
Addressing concerns raised by FOMCA regarding accessibility and pricing fairness, KTMB assured that concession discounts of up to 50% for senior citizens, retirees and people with disabilities are available through all purchasing methods. These groups only need to complete a one-time registration via KTMB’s Integrated Ticketing System (KITS) either online or at any station.

The operator also responded to accessibility concerns for elderly and visually impaired passengers, noting that staff are always available to assist them, especially when it comes to navigating TVMs or registering for concessions.
As of now, KTMB has said that over 412,000 senior citizens and 43,000 people with disabilities have registered with KITS and has assured that the team remains committed to assisting all passengers throughout their journey.
The company also took to address public speculation regarding the infrastructure investments, clarifying that the Flexi Fare model and move towards a cashless system were not designed to offset costs but to enhance passengers convenience.
