In an inspiring effort to revive the declining reading culture among Malaysians, particularly within the Tamil speaking community, the Vaasippai Nesippom initiative took place at The Temple of Fine Arts. The movement is driven by the Malaysian Tamil School Alumni Association, who loves reading and make literature more accessible to all aged people.
This initiative was describe as a ‘great effort’ by Datuk Anbumani Balan, the Chief Political Secretary to Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development YB Dato Seri Ramanan. This was praised for addressing the critical yet often overlooked issue, which is the interest in reading among today’s generation. This prepared initiative is both necessary and timely as it should not be limited to a single community or region, such efforts must reach everywhere around the country.
A Book To Begin With: Nittirai Kathaigal
This initiative was launched along with the release of a new book titled ‘Nittirai Kathaigal’, a Tamil language compilation of 61 bedtime stories. The author of the book is Dr. Kasthuri and Nirosha. Thoughtfully written to appeal to young readers and families, the book aims to bring back the bedtime storytelling tradition that has faded overtime in many households.

The book not only encourages children’s to read but also creates opportunities for parents and children to bond through shared reading experience. This showcases that such content is a crucial tool in encouraging early reading habits. As when literature is relatable, and presented in our mother tongue, it naturally draws interest, especially in the young minds. Books like this plays an crucial role in laying that foundation.
A Community Driven Mission with National Potential
More than just a book launch, Vaasippai Nesippom represents a broader educational and cultural movement. By drawing support from former Tamil school students, this initiative carries the legacy of community driven forward. These individuals who have experienced firsthand value of the language and learning, are now giving back in a meaningful way.
Acknowledging the nature of this initiative, Datuk Anbumani added that such efforts will improve the literacy and lifelong learning. He also shared that YB Dato Seri Ramanan is fully supportive of the programme and it’s expansion to reach nationwide.
While the digital age has brought convenience and access to information in our fingertips, it has contributed to the decline of sustained reading habits. While the attention span shrinks and screen time increasing, initiatives like Vaasippai Nesippom aims to bring the joy of holding a book, turning pages and getting lost in stories.
