In a show of unity and patriotism, students from all across Malaysia including those in Tamil schools have begun to proudly wear the Jalur Gemilang badge on their school uniforms, a symbolic initiative launched by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to strengthen national pride among the younger generation.
The nationwide initiative officially began yesterday 21st April with more than 5.3 million students from public schools in the national flag pin and schools of all streams including Tamil schools are showing that they too are part of this gesture of patriotism.
While the initiative is mainly targeted for schools under the MoE, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has encouraged all educational institutions to join in, highlighting the importance of shared national identity across all backgrounds and education systems.
“For educational institutions not under the MoE, we encourage them to join us in this effort to ensure that the initiative reaches wider audience and is embraced by all stakeholders”, said Fadhlina Sidek during the launch event at SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi.

More Than Just a Badge

Each student will receive two pins, making it easier to wear them daily on school uniforms. Teachers have also tasked with helping students understand the meaning behind the badge, and the proper way to wear and respect it.

Fadhlina Sidek reaffirmed that the initiative is not about enforcement, but about fostering love for the country among the younger generation
“Wearing the Jalur Gemilang is a mark of respect. So I extend my congratulations to all teachers, students, and school administrators who have worked together to ensure today’s implementation proceeded smoothly and successfully”.
Through this simple yet meaningful step, Malaysia continues to move forward as a country that celebrates it’s diversity while building a share identity.
