In celebration of the fourth anniversary of the critically acclaimed film Karnan, actor Dhanush and director Mari Selvaraj are reuniting for an exciting new project—Dhanush’s 56th film. This highly anticipated collaboration will be produced by Vels Film International and is currently being referred to as D56. Adding to the buzz, Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman has been confirmed as the music director for the film, promising a powerful musical experience to complement this much-awaited venture.
During the pre-release event of actor Shiva’s Sumo, which is also backed by Vels Film International, producer Ishari K. Ganesh made an exciting revelation. He confirmed that A.R. Rahman will be composing the music for D56, the upcoming Dhanush-Mari Selvaraj project. Additionally, he hinted at another Dhanush film being produced under the Vels banner. Although he mentioned that an official announcement is on the way, industry buzz suggests that the film in question might be directed by Por Thozhil filmmaker Vignesh Raja.

Though an official announcement from Vels Film International is still pending, D56 will see A.R. Rahman teaming up once again with director Mari Selvaraj after their collaboration on Maamannan (2023), and with Dhanush following their recent work on Raayan (2024). Rahman has previously scored music for several of Dhanush’s films, including Raanjhanaa (2013), Maryan (2013), and Atrangi Re (2021), making this upcoming project another exciting chapter in their creative partnership.
Ishari Ganesh also mentioned that Dhanush is expected to complete another film under the Vels Film International banner before commencing work on D56. The upcoming project will mark the second collaboration between Dhanush and director Mari Selvaraj, following their acclaimed 2021 film Karnan.
Meanwhile, Dhanush, who was last seen in Raayan, is gearing up for the release of his 51st film Kuberaa, directed by Shekhar Kammula, which is slated to hit theatres on June 20. He is also working on his 52nd film, Idly Kadai, which marks his fourth venture as a director. Scheduled for release on October 1, the film features Nithya Menen and Arun Vijay in key roles. Additionally, Dhanush’s 53rd film, Tere Ishk Mein, directed by Aanand L. Rai, is currently in the works.
Mari Selvaraj, on the other hand, most recently directed Vaazhai and has just completed shooting for his fifth film, Bison: Kaalamaadan. This sports drama features Dhruv Vikram and Anupama Parameswaran in the lead roles.
