Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Retro promises to be a thrilling new milestone in Suriya’s cinematic journey, combining powerful action with heartfelt romance. The film has generated tremendous buzz, with fans eagerly awaiting a bold and refreshing portrayal of the star. Industry insiders are already hailing it as a major comeback for Suriya. As Retro prepares for its grand theatrical release on May 1, the vibrant promotions and captivating music are perfectly building the excitement.

One of the most talked-about highlights from the film so far is the song Kanimaa, which has created a sensation across social media. With its soulful melody and retro-flavored sound, the track has quickly become a favorite, particularly on Instagram Reels where its emotional vibe has struck a chord with creators. Both fans and music enthusiasts have praised Kanimaa for capturing a deep sense of nostalgia while still feeling fresh and contemporary. Its heartfelt visuals, emotional depth, and delicate instrumentation have firmly established it as one of the year’s standout tracks.
At a recent promotional event for Retro, music director Santhosh Narayanan revealed that Kanimaa drew inspiration from the 2004 classic En Aasai Maithiliye from Manmadhan, starring Simbu and Jyotika. He shared that the instrumentation, sound mixing style, and emotional core of Kanimaa were carefully designed as a heartfelt tribute to that timeless track. The original, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and sung by Simbu and Suchitra, was a major hit, and Kanimaa gracefully captures that same spirit for today’s audience.
Santhosh Narayanan also announced that he will soon be releasing a special breakdown video, giving fans an exclusive look into the making of Kanimaa and the creative journey behind it. With the film’s music already capturing hearts and excitement building steadily ahead of its May 1 release, Retro is shaping up to be a musical and cinematic experience that fans are eagerly awaiting. In Malaysia, the film is being distributed by DMY Creation.
