Malaysia’s squash player Sivasangari showcased her fighting spirit at the 2025 Grasshopper Cup in Zurich, Switzerland but missed out clinching the title after falling to the world No. 1 Nouran Gohar of Egypt. Despite the 7-11, 12-14, 9-11 defeat, Sivasangari put up a tough performance againsts the Egyptian.
This final marks another significant step for the 26 year old, who continues to create history among the world’s top players. This marks Sivasangari’s fourth loss to Gohar in their meetings so far.

Meanwhile at Squash On Fire Open in Washington, national men’s No.1 Eain Yow also faced a tough outing. The world No.10 battled hard but went down at 9-11, 9-11, 5-11, to top seed Marwan EL Shorbagy of England in the men’s final. Despite the straight games loss, Eain Yow’s run to the finals demonstrates that he remains among the top contenders.

On the other hand, in the women’s event in Washington, Rachel Arnold similarly fell short. The national player lost 4-11, 3-11, 9-11 to home favorite No.10, Amanda Sobhy. Rachel fought back impressively in the third game but could not sustain the momentum.

Although the finals ended in a heartbreak for the Malaysian trio, these games underscores the strength and potential of Malaysia’s squash scene. National head coach Ajaz Azmat praised their efforts, highlighting that while opponents proved they are too strong, reaching the finals itself is an achievement. Following Sivasangari’s game in Zurich, he also expects Sivasangari to regain her place as the world’s top 10.
“Sivasangari made the right decision by moving her training base from Cornell in the US to Prague earlier this month to train under former world champion Gregory Gaultier of France”.
As the season progresses, Sivasangari, Eain Yow and Rachel will aim to build on their performances and continue to make the country proud. All three players will now focus on preparing for World Championships in Chicago from 8th May-17th May.
