Malaysia’s national badminton team secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Sudirman Cup mixed team championships in Xiamen, China, with a commanding victory over Australia earlier today.
Malaysia has already secured an unbeatable 3-0 lead, with two matches still remaining to be contested today. According to tournament regulations, all five matches must be played to completion, even if the overall outcome has already been decided.
After a commanding 5-0 victory over France yesterday, Malaysia is set to face Japan on Thursday in a crucial match that will determine the top team in the group.
Anticipating a straightforward match, Malaysia introduced eight new players for today’s clash against Australia.
World No. 4 mixed doubles duo, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei — reunited after a brief split — set the tone early for Malaysia with a convincing 21-8, 21-12 win over Ricky Teng and Gronya Somerville.

Malaysia extended their lead to 2-0 when men’s singles shuttler Justin Hoh made a strong Sudirman Cup debut, comfortably defeating Shrey Dhand 21-9, 21-15.
The winning point was then secured in commanding fashion by women’s singles player K. Letshanaa, who delivered a dominant performance against Teoh Kaiqi. With sharp footwork and aggressive shot-making, Letshanaa cruised to a 21-6, 21-8 victory, sealing Malaysia’s triumph within the first three matches and showcasing her growing confidence on the international stage.
Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik are currently in action against the Australian duo of Jack Fu and Frederick Zhao. Meanwhile, in the final match of the tie, women’s doubles team Go Pei Kee and Carmen Ting are facing off against Gronya Somerville and Angela Yu.
With the win over Australia firmly in hand, Malaysia continues to build momentum and showcase its depth ahead of the highly anticipated group decider against Japan. The team’s ability to rotate players while maintaining a high level of performance is a promising sign as they progress to the knockout stage of the Sudirman Cup. All eyes will now be on Thursday’s clash, where Malaysia will aim to top the group and carry that winning spirit into the quarter-finals.
