The two Asian countries Malaysia and Thailand are gearing up to revive the long-awaited direct train service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, aiming for a launch by the end of 2025. This announcement was made by the transport Minister Anthony Loke following his official visit to Bangkok on 2nd May.

The restored service is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, stimulate tourism and enhance economic activities between the two countries. According to Anthony Loke, the train will operate using existing railway lines connecting Bangkok, Padang Besar, Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur , eliminating the need for a new track construction.

“There’s no need to build anything new. What we need now is proper coordination between both countries, strong marketing and a joint ticketing system”, said Anthony Loke.

He added that Malaysia’s Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) and Thailand’s State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have been given three months to begin groundwork and preparations.

The direct train service previously had been popular for travelers between the two capitals, but was discontinued years ago. It’s revival is seen as a strategic move to improve convenience and strengthen diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Thailand.

Anthony Loke’s visit in Thailand included a meeting with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit and a tour of the Bang Sue Central Terminal, Thailand’s major railway hub. He also received insights into the country’s high speed rail initiatives.

In addition to the Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok route, the Thai government has proposed a extending train services from Sungai Golok across the border to Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas in Kelantan. Anthony Loke welcomed the proposal and acknowledge it’s potential to uplift the border communities and encourage regional development.

However, he also said that the Sungai Golok extension will require more time as the tracks on Malaysia’s side have not been in use for many years and will need significant restoration.

The reintroduction of KL-Bangkok train route is anticipated to offer a sustainable and good experience travel alternative while reinforcing the ties between both the countries.
