The iconic Dataran Merdeka will now host a month’s Jalur Gemilang flag-raising ceremony, every first Wednesday of every month, as part of a new initiative to promote national pride and reflect on Malaysia’s journey toward independence.

Announced by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr.Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the ceremony will take place from 8:50AM to 9AM and is open to the public. She encouraged all Malaysians to participate, stating that the event is designed to strengthen patriotic spirit and national unity.

“This initiative is part of the Kuala Lumpur Heritage Programme launched by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim”, said Datuk Dr.Maimunah during the officiation of the ceremony. “It’s not only a tribute to our national flag, but also a moment of reflection on Malaysia’s history and aspirations”.

First introduced in November 2024, the monthly ceremony also aims to enhance the cultural and historical appeal of Dataran Merdeka, a site that holds deep significance as the birthplace of Malaysia’s independence.

To further enhance the experience, schools and community groups will be invited to participate in the ceremony, turning it into a civic event that fosters a sense of shared national identity.

According to the Mayor, the programme also supports Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s goals of urban development by strengthening community bonds and promoting respect for the nation’s flag.

She added that the ceremony is expected to attract both local and international tourists who want to experience Malaysia’s heritage in a meaningful way.

The next ceremony is scheduled for the first Wednesday of the coming month, which is open for everyone to attend.
