In a bold and unconventional move that’s set to challenge industry norms, actor Silambarasan TR has announced that he will portray a transgender character in his milestone 50th film. The revelation came during promotions for his highly anticipated project Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan. This daring choice signals a significant step in mainstream cinema, reflecting a growing willingness to explore diverse and underrepresented narratives.

Directed by Desingh Periyasamy, the film will feature music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, who reunites with Silambarasan TR after their successful collaborations on Vallavan, Manmadhan, Silambattam, Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan, Vaanam, and Maanaadu. Known for delivering chart-topping hits, the STR-Yuvan partnership is a fan favourite, and this dynamic duo continues to be one of the most celebrated combinations in Tamil cinema.
The actor previously described STR 50 as “a dream project for both Desingh and me. We’re putting our hearts and souls into it!” Marking another milestone in his career, he is also stepping into the role of producer for the first time, backing the film under his own banner, Atman Cine Arts.
STR 50 will feature editing by Praveen and cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa. Following this milestone film, Silambarasan is set to collaborate with Dragon director Ashwath Marimuthu for his 51st project. Meanwhile, he will also reunite with his longtime friend and actor Santhanam for his 49th film, directed by Ramkumar Balakrishnan of Parking fame. The film will also feature Kayadu Lohar in a key role.
