India’s aviation sector is witnessing remarkable growth, with plans underway to add 50 more airports over the next five years. Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu shared this vision on Monday, noting that the number of airports in the country has already more than doubled—from 74 in 2014 to 162 today—reflecting a strong push towards enhancing air connectivity and infrastructure.
While addressing the annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu highlighted that the government’s regional air connectivity initiative, UDAN, has made air travel more accessible to the common citizen. He noted that the scheme has successfully launched a total of 619 flight routes across the country.

Naidu also stated that efforts are underway to establish India as a global hub for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, with the sector expected to reach a value of USD 4 billion by 2031. He further urged international stakeholders to partner with India in the production of sustainable aviation fuel, underscoring the critical need for decarbonisation in the aviation industry.
India stands among the fastest-growing civil aviation markets globally, driven by rising demand for air travel, expanding infrastructure, and supportive government policies. With a rapidly increasing number of passengers and new routes being introduced, the country’s aviation industry is experiencing unprecedented growth and is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of global air travel.
