A grand celebration of Tamil heritage came to life at Tamizh Vanna Vizha, a lively cultural event co-organised by the Office of the State Assemblyman for N50 Kota Kemuning, Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) – MPP Zon 13, and Sri Rathakrishnan Fine Arts. Drawing a crowd of over 3,000 people, the event served as a vibrant showcase of Tamil culture and traditions, bringing together communities from across Malaysia in a spirited display of unity and cultural pride.
Tamizh Vanna Vizha was proudly featured as part of the official celebrations for the 25th Silver Jubilee of Shah Alam City, marking 25 years of the city’s growth as a vibrant and inclusive urban centre. The event received enthusiastic support and endorsement from Dato’ Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim, Mayor of Shah Alam, and YB Tuan Preakas Sampunathan, State Assemblyman for N50 Kota Kemuning.
The event was graced by the presence of several esteemed dignitaries, including YB Senator Puan Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity; YB Tuan Papparaidu Veraman, EXCO for Human Resources and Poverty Eradication; YB Tuan Ganabatirau Veraman, Member of Parliament for Klang; Tuan Mohamd Raizuli Bin Mat Jusoh from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture; Encik Wan Mohd Mahfodz Bin Wan Hasan, Assistant Director of the Arts and Culture Unit; and Sri Radhakrishnan Alagamalai, President of the Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram.
The inspiration for Tamizh Vanna Vizha originated with Mr. Nathindran Raj Baskaran, Chairman of MPP Zon 13, who approached Ms. Nalini Rathakris, Founder and President of Pertubuhan Kesenian dan Kebudayaan SRFA, to collaborate on a meaningful initiative for the Indian community. In response, Ms. Nalini envisioned a celebration centered around Tamil Puthandu (Tamil New Year)—a cultural programme designed to revive and highlight the richness of traditional Tamil heritage. Her goal was to create an educational and engaging platform that would inspire the younger generation to connect with and take pride in their cultural roots.
One of the most memorable moments of Tamizh Vanna Vizha was its historic entry into the Malaysia Book of Records for the “Most Participants in a Poem Recital.” This remarkable feat featured a mass recital of the iconic poem Achamillai Achamillai by the legendary Tamil poet, Mahakavi Bharathiyar. A total of 1,631 participants—comprising students and members of cultural groups from across the country—came together to recite the powerful verses in unison. The performance was a moving tribute to Bharathiyar’s fearless spirit and ideals, serving as a symbolic expression of unity, cultural pride, and the enduring strength of Tamil identity.
Their heartfelt appreciation was directed toward Ms. Nalini, commending her for her inspiring vision, tireless efforts, and passionate dedication to preserving and promoting Tamil heritage through such a meaningful and impactful initiative.
The celebration was further enlivened by a series of engaging cultural competitions, including Tamil public speaking, rangoli kolam art, toranam tying, and bharatanatyam dance performances. These activities brought color, creativity, and cultural depth to the event, showcasing the talents of participants across all age groups.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was a bustling bazaar that featured a variety of traditional offerings—delicious Tamil cuisine, ethnic attire, cultural literature, and handcrafted items. Together, these elements created a vibrant and immersive cultural experience that resonated with attendees of all ages.
Tamizh Vanna Vizha stood as a remarkable celebration of Tamil culture, identity, and community spirit. Through its thoughtfully curated performances, record-breaking recital, traditional competitions, and festive marketplace, the event successfully brought together people of all backgrounds in a shared appreciation of heritage and tradition. It not only highlighted the richness of Tamil arts and values but also fostered intergenerational connection and pride. As part of Shah Alam’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, the event left a lasting impression—honouring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring future generations to embrace and uphold their cultural legacy.
