Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan’s much-anticipated film Thug Life, which premiered in theatres on June 5, 2025, has fallen short of box office expectations. Despite the buzz surrounding the reunion of legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after their iconic collaboration in Nayakan, the gangster drama received a mixed critical response, which has dampened its theatrical momentum. Adding to its challenges, the film now faces complications with its post-theatrical release, as streaming platform Nails—reportedly the holder of its digital rights—is said to be reconsidering its deal.
According to a report by Pinkvilla, Netflix is now pushing for a 20–25% reduction on the previously agreed amount for the digital streaming rights of Thug Life. The OTT rights were initially sold for a hefty ₹130 crore, banking on the legendary duo of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan. However, due to the film’s underwhelming theatrical performance, the platform is reportedly reassessing its investment. Discussions are also underway to shorten the gap between theatrical and digital release from eight weeks to just four, signaling a strategy to improve accessibility and maximize returns.

In addition to Kamal Haasan, Thug Life features a stellar ensemble cast, including Silambarasan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nassar, and Ali Fazal. As Netflix and the film’s producers work to reassess their release strategy, Kamal Haasan is already gearing up for his next major venture, KH237, which marks the directorial debut of acclaimed stunt choreographers Anbarivu. Meanwhile, Silambarasan (STR) is expected to team up with director Vetri Maaran soon, along with several other projects currently in development.
