Malaysia Shines at Southeast Asian Karate Championships with 6 Gold Medals & Strong Overall Showing

The national karate team delivered an impressive showing at the 12th Southeast Asian Karate Championships, which wrapped up yesterday in Bandar Seri Begawan. Demonstrating skill, determination, and teamwork, the squad brought home four gold medals, marking a strong finish for Malaysia on the regional stage.

The gold medal victories were earned by C. Shamalarani in the women’s senior kumite under 50kg category, K.S. Thevendran Kaliana Sundram in the men’s senior kumite under 55kg, Sureeya Shankar Hari Shankar in the men’s senior kumite under 60kg, Shiv Ram Prakash in the junior kumite male under 76kg category, the men’s senior team in the kumite event, as well as the cadet and junior male kata team, who clinched gold in their category.

  • Nurul Asyiqin binti Mohd Hasrul – Junior Kumite Female -59kg

  • Jonathan Quek Jian Liang – Junior Kumite Male -68kg

  • Diya Khalish binti Kasryanto – Cadet Kumite Female -61kg

  • Tan Yin Yao – Cadet Kumite Male -70kg

Acting national karate head coach R. Shamendran expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance at the championship.

“We didn’t set any specific targets for this tournament because we wanted to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the athletes. Overall, I would say their performance was decent, though I do believe they have the potential to achieve even more,” he told Bernama today.

With a total of four gold and three bronze medals, the Malaysian karate team has once again demonstrated its growing strength and competitiveness on the regional stage. While there is always room for improvement, the results from the 12th Southeast Asian Karate Championships reflect the team’s hard work and dedication. As preparations continue for future international events, this performance provides a solid foundation and motivation to aim even higher.
