In a heartwarming act of compassion and solidarity, Bukit Mertajam Member of Parliament and Human Resource Minister Steven Sim has helped a young woman achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. R.Saundarya, who was on the verge of being barred from her final medical exams due to unpaid tuition fees, is now a proud medical graduate, earning accolades along with degree.
The story, shared by Sim on social media, has gone viral, touching the hearts of thousands and drawing praise for the MP’s unwavering commitment to community care and empowerment.
A Desperate Plea and a Timely Response
The turning point came when Saundarya, in a desperate bid to save her academic future, wrote to Sim’s service centre last year, explaining that she currently needed to pay nearly RM20,000 in tuition fees within days. Without it, she would be unable to sit for her final semester examinations, a devastating prospect for someone who had worked tirelessly for five years to become a doctor.

Saundarya’s father, a lorry driver, and grandfather, a rubber tapper, simply could not afford the heavy sum. Recognising the urgency, and importance of her request, Sim met the family and decide to take action. He not only raised the necessary funds but also pledged to support for Saundarya, ensuring she had what she needed to complete her studies.
A Dream Realised, Saundarya’s Graduation
Thanks to the timely support, Saundarya not only completed her medical degree but did so with distinction. At her convocation ceremony, attended by Sim and her proud family, she was awarded the Outstanding Student Medal and made it to the Dean’s List three times throughout her course.
“I was deeply honoured to be invited by her family”, Sim wrote in his post, adding that it was a moment of immense pride to see her walk across the stage in her graduation robes. To celebrate her achievements, Sim surprised Saundarya with a gift, an small Apple Watch, a small token to commemorate her perseverance and success.

Her father, overcome with emotion at the event, expressed his gratitude to Sim for stepping in when the family had lost hope,
“You gave us a light when everything felt dark”, he reportedly told the Minister.
As Saundarya prepares to begin her housemanship at a public hospital in Penang next week, Sim offered her heartfelt advice that echoed the values of humility and service.
“Always remember your parents sacrifices. And when you wear that whites coat, you must do your utmost to help those in need. When you meet patients from underprivileged backgrounds, remember the tiny rented room where you studied, and the bread and Maggie that kept you company at night. The world needs doctors who are not only smart but also compassionate”.
Widespread Praise and a Call to Action
Sim’s story, posted on Facebook, has received over 18,000 reactions with many Malaysians applauding the MP for going above and beyond his role. His gesture is not just seen as a one-time act of kindness but as a reflection of the kind of empathetic leadership many hope to see more of it in Malaysian politics.
The story also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles many students from low-income families face when pursuing higher education. Sim’s intervention helped not only one young woman achieve her dreams, but also highlighted the importance of accessible education and community support systems.
As Saundarya embarks on her journey in the medical field, her story stands as a testament to resilience, kindness, and the impact of helping someone at the right time.
