A wave of grief and concern has rippled through Malaysia following the tragic murder of 20-year old university student R.Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, whose body was discovered in her residential unit at Mutiara Ville, Cyberjaya on 24th June 2025. The students unit was shared with five other students who had returned to their hometowns for their semester break. A friend found her body in the hostel and alerted the authorities around 10am.
What Happened?
Maniishapriet, originally from Kuching, Sarawak, is a student who was studying Bachelors of Physiotherapy and was found with severe head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, prompting a murder investigation and raising questions. Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed that the autopsy results determined her cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head. He further clarified that no evidence of sexual assault was found, debunking unverified and harmful rumors circulating on social media.

A Murder and a Manhunt
In a troubling development, police revealed that the suspect used Maniishapriet’s ATM card multiple times after the murder to make unauthorized withdrawals at several locations in Kuala Lumpur. The transactions were detected shortly after the estimated time of death. Other personal items including her mobile phone, laptop and cash were also missing from the unit. Law enforcement has now obtained the CCTV footage to track down the suspect of the murder.

The tragedy has prompted widespread concern and calls for reform. University of Cyberjaya officials echoed this sentiment, confirming that they are working with security experts to review infrastructure, surveillance systems, and emergency protocols. The university and the victims family has also asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy and refrain from speculating or sharing unverified information during the ongoing investigation.
A Campus Mourning
Maniishapriet’s death has struck a nerve in the academic community and beyond, not just because of the horror of the crime, but because it happened in a space that students and parents assume to be safe. As police continue their investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for Murder, the hunt for the suspect remains active. Authorities are calling on anyone with information to come forward.
