As director Ram’s latest film Paranthu Po garners positive reception in theatres, a touching message of praise and appreciation has emerged from none other than his former assistant and renowned filmmaker, Mari Selvaraj.
Currently in the United States on official duties, Mari Selvaraj expressed his disappointment at not being in Chennai for the release of Paranthu Po—an event he rarely misses. “I’m usually right there with Ram sir during his film releases, feeling both anxious and hopeful,” he said. “Although I’m miles away this time, my heart is full of joy. Friends from Chennai have been calling to share how much they enjoyed Paranthu Po, describing it as a refreshing blend of humour and depth.”
Ram, widely recognised for his intense and thought-provoking storytelling, takes an unexpected yet refreshing approach with Paranthu Po—a film praised for its warmth, gentle humour, and emotional depth. For Mari Selvaraj, however, the film goes far beyond entertainment; it serves as a heartfelt tribute to the man he regards as his greatest mentor.

“I genuinely encourage everyone to see it,” Mari says. “It’s a film that will not only make you laugh but also renew your faith in humanity. Everything I am today is because of Ram sir. If you could capture all the wisdom and life lessons he’s shared with me over the years and turn them into a film, Paranthu Po would be that film.”
Paranthu Po features Shiva, Grace Anthony, and Master Mitul Ryan in the lead roles, supported by a strong ensemble cast that includes Anjali, Aju Varghese, Vijay Yesudas, Dia, Jesse Kukku, Balaji Sakthivel, and Sreeja Ravi. The film had its international premiere earlier this year at the 54th International Film Festival of Rotterdam.
The technical team behind the film includes NK Ekhambaram as the cinematographer, Mathi VS handling editing, Kumar Gangappan as the production designer, and Stunt Silva in charge of action choreography. The project is produced by Ram, V. Gunasekaran, V. Karupuchaamy, and V. Shankar, with support from JioHotstar, GKS Bros Production, and Seven Seas Seven Hills Productions.

Paranthu Po thus stands not only as Ram’s artistic pivot toward lighter, life‑affirming storytelling but also as a testament to the deep mentor–protégé bond he shares with Mari Selvaraj. Early audience reactions, festival recognition, and the heartfelt endorsements of industry peers all point to a film that balances warmth and insight while highlighting Ram’s enduring influence on the next generation of filmmakers.
Distributed in Malaysia by FiveStar Trading, Paranthu Po is now showing in cinemas nationwide. With its touching narrative and emotional resonance, the film promises to leave audiences both uplifted and reflective—underscoring the power of cinema to inspire, connect, and celebrate the human spirit.
