A male suspect linked to the murder of university student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara in Cyberjaya is expected to face charges soon under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which pertains to murder, according to Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.

Earlier reports indicated that the suspect was scheduled to be charged at the Sepang Magistrates’ Court at 8.30am today. However, Sepang Police Chief Norhizam Bahaman later confirmed, as reported by Free Malaysia Today, that the proceedings have been postponed to a date yet to be decided.

Three individuals — a man and two women aged 19 and 20 — were taken into custody between June 26 and June 27 in Johor Baru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, after the discovery of Maniishapriet’s body. The victim, a University of Cyberjaya student, was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend on June 24.

Maniishapriet had been staying with five housemates, who had left for their hometowns for the holidays on June 21.  According to police, all three suspects were acquainted with the victim, and there were no indications of forced entry into her condominium unit.

The autopsy revealed that Maniishapriet died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, with no signs of sexual assault. Investigators also disclosed that the male suspect had used Maniishapriet’s debit card to withdraw cash from several ATMs shortly after her death.

Her laptop, mobile phone, and a sum of cash were also reported missing from the condominium unit. The remand for all three suspects has been extended until July 1.
