The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Sibu, Sarawak, which has stood as a place of worship for 105 years, held its Maha Kumbabishegam ceremony this morning in a grand and vibrant manner, with rituals beginning at 10.30 am.
Temple chairman K. Manogaran shared that the Maha Kumbabishegam ceremony drew a large crowd of devotees, including many from outside the state, who came to witness the event at the temple, which was constructed at an estimated cost of RM2 million.
105 years ago, Indian workers who arrived in the region to work on plantations built this temple on a modest scale as a way to preserve their religious traditions and ensure their spiritual well-being. It served as a place of worship, comfort, and cultural identity for the early community, reflecting their deep devotion and commitment to maintaining their faith in a new land.

Manogaran said that as the number of devotees visiting the temple continued to grow steadily, the temple was expanded to provide greater convenience and comfort for the public. Sarawak Hindu Sangam Chairman Prabu Kiruba stated that, due to the temple’s growing appeal among tourists visiting Sarawak, renovation and expansion works were launched a few years ago to further enhance and develop the temple.
“This temple stands as a significant historical symbol of the Indian community in Sarawak. While Hindu temples, especially Amman temples, can be found in Kuching and Miri, this is the first temple in Sibu to be built using modern architectural techniques,” he said.
He stated that the Maha Kumbabishegam was successfully held today, thanks to the generous support and encouragement from both the government and the local community. The temple is located in an area where more than 350 Indian families reside.
The successful completion of the Maha Kumbabishegam marks a proud and historic milestone for the Indian community in Sibu, reaffirming the temple’s role as a spiritual, cultural, and social cornerstone. With its rich legacy, modern architectural revival, and continued community support, the Arulmigu Maha Mariamman Temple stands as a lasting symbol of faith and unity for generations to come.
