With just one month remaining until the global premiere of Coolie, anticipation for Lokesh Kanagaraj’s much-awaited action thriller is reaching fever pitch. Featuring the legendary Rajinikanth in the lead, the film marks the celebrated director’s first collaboration with the iconic star. Positioned to be one of the biggest cinematic spectacles of the year, Coolie is already generating immense buzz among fans and film enthusiasts alike.
Further fueling the excitement, Coolie features a star-studded ensemble cast, including renowned actors Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan. Adding to the film’s grandeur, Bollywood icon Aamir Khan is set to make a special cameo appearance.

As Lokesh Kanagaraj works diligently to finalize the film, it was Rajinikanth’s heartfelt reaction after viewing a cut of Coolie that truly moved the director. Known for being reserved with praise, the legendary actor embraced Lokesh and said, “It felt like Thalapathi to me!”—a powerful compliment that left the filmmaker deeply emotional. Lokesh later described it as the most peaceful night he has experienced in recent times.
“That moment truly made my day, and that night, I finally slept peacefully after months,” Lokesh shared with The Hollywood Reporter India. He went on to reveal that Thalapathi (1991), directed by Mani Ratnam, has always been his favorite Rajinikanth film. It was the film’s unique blend of mass appeal and artistic depth that inspired him to capture a similar essence in Coolie.

“If I were ever to make a film with Rajini sir, it had to come somewhere close to Thalapathi,” Lokesh said. “I know I can never match the brilliance of Mani sir’s storytelling—his writing and filmmaking are in a league of their own. But hearing Coolie being compared to that iconic film gives me a sense of fulfillment. Receiving such words from Rajini sir himself felt like a true accomplishment.”
Coolie is all set to hit cinemas worldwide on August 14, promising a grand cinematic experience that fans won’t want to miss.
