Tun V.T. Sambanthan was one of the key architects of Malaysia’s independence and a passionate advocate for unity in a diverse nation. As a founding father and former president of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), he played a vital role in shaping the political landscape during a crucial period in the country’s history. His efforts to bridge ethnic divides and foster racial harmony laid the foundation for a peaceful, multicultural Malaysia. Sambanthan believed that unity among all races was essential for national progress, and he worked closely with leaders of other communities to build a common vision for the newly independent nation.
Beyond his role in politics, Tun Sambanthan is especially remembered for his tireless work on behalf of the Indian community, particularly plantation workers who faced difficult living and working conditions. He championed equal rights and worked to improve access to education, housing, and fair employment for the marginalized. His legacy lives on as a symbol of compassion, integrity, and unwavering dedication to justice and social harmony—values that continue to resonate in Malaysia’s ongoing journey as a united, pluralistic society.
Honouring the enduring legacy of Tun V.T. Sambanthan—a visionary leader whose contributions continue to shape Malaysia’s unity policies—the Ministry of National Unity, in collaboration with the National Archives of Malaysia, organized the Tun V.T. Sambanthan Memorial event yesterday at Thotta Mahligai, Petaling Jaya. The event was attended by community leaders, school students, and other guests who came together to pay tribute and celebrate his lasting impact. The event served as a meaningful tribute to a statesman whose unwavering commitment to national harmony and integration remains a guiding force in shaping a united and inclusive Malaysia.

Tun V.T. Sambanthan, who served not only as a prominent politician but also as Malaysia’s first Minister of National Unity, played a key role in introducing policies to promote and preserve national cohesion. Officiating the event, Minister of National Unity YB Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang noted that these policies remain relevant and in effect to this day, and emphasized the importance of passing them on to the younger generation.
“That is exactly why we have organized this event — to honor and reflect on the legacy of a great national leader,” he said. “We are in the process of establishing a historical council dedicated to uncovering and highlighting lesser-known chapters of our nation’s history, particularly those not covered in school textbooks. Our goal is to present an accurate and truthful account of history and ensure it is properly represented in educational materials.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of National Unity, Senator Saraswathy Kandasamy, emphasized that the event is part of a broader effort to help future generations understand the importance of unity and the principles of effective leadership.
She further noted that the National Archives of Malaysia has taken the initiative to compile and publish a book titled Tun V.T. Sambanthan Speaks, featuring a collection of the late leader’s speeches.
“As all of his speeches were originally delivered in English, the compilation is currently in English as well. Once the necessary editing and refinement are completed, we plan to translate the book into Tamil and make it available to students in Tamil schools,” he added.

Tun V.T. Sambanthan, who served as the fifth president of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC)—a party that primarily represented the Indian community—played a pivotal role in helping plantation workers secure land ownership and uplift their quality of life. His daughter, Devakunjari Sambanthan, noted that he was also instrumental in the founding of the National Land Finance Cooperative Society (NLFCS), spearheading various efforts to establish the cooperative in support of these objectives.
The Tun V.T. Sambanthan Memorial event served as a powerful tribute to a visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape Malaysia’s path toward unity and inclusion. His lifelong dedication to national harmony, the upliftment of marginalized communities, and the promotion of equality remains deeply relevant today. As efforts continue to preserve and share his contributions with future generations, Tun Sambanthan’s enduring values stand as a guiding light for a more united, just, and harmonious Malaysia.
