Batik Air is set to further strengthen regional ties with the launch of its new direct service between Kuala Lumpur and Palembang, scheduled to begin 12th September 2025. This latest addition underscores the airline’s strategic expansion across Indonesia and its commitment to enhancing connectivity within Southeast Asia.
The route will be services by Boeing 737-800 aircraft, offering both Economy and Business Class cabins. The new link not only provides travelers with greater convenience and flexibility but also plays a vital role in reinforcing Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a premier hub for Umrah and long-haul international travel.
Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, Chief Executive Officer of Batik Air, emphasised that Indonesia remains one of the airline’s strongest and most important markets.
“This new route reflects our ongoing efforts to connect more cities across the archipelago directly to Kuala Lumpur, offering travellers greater flexibility, convenience, and access to global destinations. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is developing into a leading hub for Umrah and international travel, and we’re proud to support this growth by adding more strategic gateways like Palembang to our network,” he said.

With this addition, Palembang joins Batik Air’s growing Malaysian-Indonesian network, which already includes Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Batam, Medan, Pekanbaru, and Lombok. Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra, is steeped in historic significance. Known as one of the oldest cities in Southeast Asia and the former heart of the Srivijaya Empire, Palembang boast a unique blend of heritage and modernity.
Nestled along the Musi River, the city is famed for landmarks such as the Ampera Bridge, vibrant floating markets, intricate songket weaving, and culinary specialties like pempek, a traditional fishcake dish beloved across Indonesia. Palembang is also an emerging hub for industry and commerce, marking it an attractive destination for both leisure and business travellers.

For Malaysian and international passengers transiting through KLIA, the new route unlocks access to a culturally rich yet underexplored Indonesian city. Meanwhile, travellers from Palembang and its surrounding regions will enjoy enhanced connectivity to Kuala Lumpur and beyond, including destinations in the Middle East and Europe via KLIA.
As Batik Air continues to expand its route map, the airline remains committed to bridging communities, cultures, and countries across Southeast Asia, reaffirming its role in shaping Kuala Lumpur into a leading regional aviation and pilgrimage hub.
