The 71st National Film Awards, celebrating cinematic excellence for the year 2023, were officially announced by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with Tamil cinema proudly making its mark.
Among the standout winners was Ramkumar Balakrishan’s debut directional, ‘Parking’, which emerged as a major victor by clinching three prestigious awards. The intense drama, which explores the clash of egos between two tenants over a parking spot, was awarded Best Tamil Film, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

Veteran actor MS Bhaskar, who delivered a powerful performance in Parking, shared the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award with Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan for ‘Pookkaalam’. Parking also featured strong performances from Harish Kalyan, Induja Ravichandran, Prathana Nathan, and Rama Rajendra.
Meanwhile, music composer GV Prakash Kumar clinched the Best Music Direction Award for his work in ‘Vaathi’ starring Dhanush. The film’s soundtrack, particularly the fan-favorite track ‘Vaa Vaathi’ sung by Shweta Mohan and penned by Dhanush, was among the most popular of 2023. This marks GV Prakash’s second National Award in this category, having previously won for ‘Soorarai Pottru’ at the 68th National Film Awards.

Reacting to the win, GV Prakash shared a heartfelt note on X, calling it a ‘blessing for the second time’. He thanked the award jury, his long-time collaborator Dhanush and Vaathi director Venky Atluri for their continued trust.

In the non-feature film categories, Tamil cinema continued to shine. Saravanamaruthu Soundarapandi and Meenakshi Soman received the Best Cinematography award for their work on ‘Little Wings’, directed by Naveen Mu.
With wins spanning both feature and non-feature categories, Tamil cinema’s creative depth and storytelling brilliance were clearly recognized at the national level, reinforcing the industry’s rising influence on India’s cinematic landscape.
